Who do you like for equipment mods?
For speaker repair of vintage stuff, I'd try Bill LeGall at Millersound. He's less of a mod guy. He's been around forever. I've never used him but talked with him & his website's amazing.
Pass Labs XVR 1 upgraded pot replacement ?
Sadly the hexfreds are not a drop-in as the XVR-1 uses a bridge package not discrete units. Looking at the data sheet & the unit inside you've got about an inch of clearance behind the pots so I think you'll be ok fit-wise.The more problematic...
Pass Labs XVR 1 upgraded pot replacement ?
One of mine's noisy too - use contact cleaner. I replaced the stock power supply diodes with hexfreds. I wouldn't replace the pots as I find I need very fine adjustments here and I'm not sure the typical 24 step pot or even a 32 would be discrete ...
Sansui TU-X1 tuner vs. Magnum Dynalab 109
People would kill for your TU-X1 tuner!Yes mods would help. I had my Sansui done by one of the best Ken @ Stereo Surgeons in Hartford, CT & it sounds worlds better than stock. Ken's a Sansui expert & his pricing is very reasonable & he...
Personal amp evolution
Since 1968....1) Acoutic Research (AR) Receiver (early SS sound) 2) Crown D150 (early ss sound- not much better but pretty!)3) Phase Linear 400 (Hey this is good. Killed the Crown)4) Phase Linear 700B (noticeable step down from 400)5) Phase 40...
Is a Power Wedge 116 any good?
After 30 years, I have found that power cable have given me the least sonic improvements in terms of relative value than almost any other upgrades and results are highly variable. I think there's probably something else that will give you more ban...
Modded SACD player: SACD or Redbook sound best?"
I'm not sure how they did the double blind AES test but if they couldn't hear the difference, they're "doubly deaf". On good recordings, sound quality is noticeably better on SACD in terms of inner detail and highs especially. Music has more body ...
Three Cheers for Pass Labs
I own a Pass Labs X0.2, an XVR-1-3 crossover, an Xono phono, a pair of Aleph 2s, and a Threshold S/550-e. Not only do they sound great and are well-build; they're all classics or destined to become so.When I was considering the crossover purchase ...
break-in for Marantz SA-7S1
To answer the question I think 200-300 hours or so should do it. Mine was a demo so I can't be sure but it's always sounded good. I'm not sure what CDs and associated equipment other people are listening to when they say a Marantz SA7S1 is "too fo...
Upgraded Counterpoint Hybrid SA-220 Power Amps
I have both an SA 20 and an NP 220 gold version - sort of. The SA 20 is nice sounding but not exactly reference yet I doubt I'll ever sell it. I really like it.The NP220 (hi-output)has all the works except the wiring & the Vishays found in the...
Why do my transformers hum sometimes?
Halogens!!!! & other similar noise makers like dimmer switches & PCs! Halogens are deadly. They dump so much noise on AC lines you can hear the trafos across the room. Even if they're on another circuit. You'll know instantly if you have th...
Need some help regarding Threshold SA12e Mono bias
Nice amps. The value for the SA12e is 1.1 amp cold. You can adjust voltage across the emitter resistor to get this current reading or take the rail fuses out and measure current directly which ever is easier. It's better to do this with the cover ...
Upgraded Counterpoint Hybrid SA-220 Power Amps
I have an upgraded SA-20 to NP 220. Been using it for 4-5 years now. Very nice amp. coupling caps are worth playing with for tuning the sound - V-caps are great.
Solid State Phono Preamp.
How about a Pass Labs Xono? Still shows up on Absolute Sounds '07 Reviewer's favorites (AHC is the only reviewer I trust - he has a real day job). I'm ordering one this weekend.
