What's the most overrated or overpriced piece of equipment you own, have owned or come by?
1- Classe: 350 wpc x2 amp. 2- Classe 150 wpc x 6/ 300 wpc x3 amp. 3,4- Their matching preamps. I am not saying they were bad, by any means, but they are way over designed, grossly expensive to repair, and do not sound overall better than my Audire...
is there a market?
Recordings in the 50's and 60's were made on tape. remastered, they can sound really good, but the actual 1950's pressings are not that good.many of these tapes still exist and are available on CD, a much better format. (Supex, Signet xk50, Aristo...
Determining current flow to install "audiophile" fuses.
I know, but I think this fuse business belongs with the green CD marker and the $650 wood volume knob. Anyway, the electricity flows from the transformer and caps, toward the output transistors.
Dual Differential / Balanced?
i don't think that is a critical issue. Other factors are equally important. I happen to have fully balanced, dual mono amps, but other stuff sounds great, too..
What's in your CDP tonight? the minority report
I had to go look. It is Gene Harris Live with the Phillip morris All Stars. I do still play my LP's, with Oscar Peterson's Live at Montreaux sitting next to it.LP: "It's A Beautiful Day". I don't have the CD.
2 subs in a small room?
My system uses the second sub so that I can use two of the same amps to drive them. I did phase align the subs with my main speakers, using a most useful tool, a yardstick.
Why Are There So Many Audio Research Reference 5SE's For Sale
I have really good equipment, but would trade any of it for most AR stuff, except the cost and the tube maintenance.
Jazz for aficionados
Diane Schur with Maynard Ferguson rocks!Live Gene Harris. Most any Oscar Peterson that is well recorded. My actual favorite jazz song: How can you beat the invention of Acid Jazz? When Maynard Ferguson lived with Timothy Leary, Dizzy, Maynard, and o...
Not enough power?
When the sound "thins out", as you say, the power supply is not supplying as much juice as the output transistors could use. The bass goes first. Years ago, I bought my Dad a 90 wpc Pioneer receiver, which is now on my TV. At higher volumes, I los...
I have an uber awesome amp, why buy a speaker with a built in woofer sub-woofer amp
I heard some entry level 600 series B&W speakers. The 605, with a sub amp and speakers, was able to produce a greater sound level with a smaller main amp. Also, crossover losses are less. I have some old B&W DM 1400's This speaker was also...
Jaw Dropping
"Going for" is wishful thinking. Good luck to the seller.
Does the ceiling fan affect the sound?
A ceiling fan that is properly designed for an audio system has three blades, rather than four. Try it and prove what nerds we can be.
Direction of aftermarket fuses (only for believers!)
This reminds me. I haven't been able to find the correct green color magic marker for my CD's, nor a $650 wood volume knob.
WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH WATTS?
I run 125 wpc on some 93 db B&W 803's and have to use another amp to drive subs. If you are going to have tone controls and plan to use a bit of bass boost, more power might help. otherwise, the actual difference between 80 and 125 watts is pr...
Anti skate. I think something's wrong
Few tonearms have accurate anti-skate markings. Add in the difference between stylus shapes and you have what I persona;; have only seen Grace address. Their instructions, at least for my friend's 707, says to look at the stylus when you start the...
