What Cartridge Would Make the Best Match?
Guys,I believe the EAR 834p is available in MM-only or MC + MM versions. Which does he have? If it's the MC version, how much gain does it provide.Don't we need to know that before tossing out cartridge recommendations?Let me know if I'm all wet.
DC, AC,, battery, asynchronous?
The main problem with AC motors is that they run in a constant series of shove-coast cycles. They don't run at a steady speed, they're shoved around and then coast, like those hand-powered merry-go-rounds we rode on as young kids in the playground...
Stylus Cleaning Schedule?
As Bombaywalla said, the best stylus cleaner is a clean LP.Since I play only well-cleaned LP's my need for actual stylus cleaning is fairly low. I do dry brush it after each side with a corner of the CF brush before brushing the record. Once in a ...
Herman eats crow, RRL record cleaning fluids work
Herman,Just got back from a week away, thus the delayed response. Glad you're enjoying the experience with the RRL stuff so far. Even if your DD fluid worked just as well, as you say the amount of time and distilled spent rinsing would leave it a ...
Teres 340, anyone heard / seen one in the flesh
A huge thank you to 'Cello' for sharing the opening weekend of his 345, oops, 340-2. Paul and I enjoyed five listening sessions with his amazing rig, usually in the company of 4-5 other audiophiles who were able to accept the invitation of our gra...
Transformer stepup size
A fellow A'goner was using a high gain phono stage. Just for kicks he borrowed my BentAudio stepups and tried them into the MM stage of his preamp. That setup blew his high gain phono stage out of the water. He literally had it up for sale hear in...
Hum Problem with Grado
Cserbell,Good detective work, but the hum is not caused by physical vibration of the motor. It's caused by leakage of electromagnetic energy from the AC motor coils. EM energy travels through air pretty readily. That's why radio works. Most cartrid...
Optimal Loading for Shelter 501 mk2
When I first experimented with cartridge loads last year I was convinced that 22-25 ohms was best in my setup (901 >> BentAudio Mu >> c-j MM phono). I was wrong. It turns out I was compensating for other setup errors. My arm was too hig...
Optimal Loading for Shelter 501 mk2
I've tried the Buggtussel on several moldy-looking records. It helps, though I've yet to see it completely remove the spots on (in?) the vinyl. Definitely better than not using it, though it won't return a moldy record to shiny black either. Maybe...
Optimal Loading for Shelter 501 mk2
William,Lowering the load seen by the cartridge *reduced* bass? That doesn't make sense to me at all. Should be the other way around.Do you live in Australia? ;-)
Can a MC cartridge be used with a MM preamp?
Ditto what Eldartford, Theo and Bombaywalla said. To make a HO MC they either have to increase the size of the coils and/or increase the number of windings. Doing either defeats the point of the MC design, which is to minimize moving mass to allow...
Turntable Problems
Fairly obvious, but have you checked the cartridge clips? A loose/bent/broken/shorted cartridge ground could cause a hum.
Out of production reference turntables
Naimfan,Interesting observations. The Rockport seperated instruments better in space. That implies superior reproduction of the time domain. Perhaps due to better speed stability? The Goldmund seperated instruments better in timbre or tonality. That...
VPI Scout or Michell Technodec?
Crazy4blues, I suspect that 60db before your line stage will be plenty for a 501, unless you have a VERY low gain line stage.I have a Shelter 901, similar output to a 501 (.1mv more). The 67db of gain I have before my line stage is much more than ...
Out of production reference turntables
Silly me. All these long years I thought the tunes were provided by the musicians. They actually come from the turntable! So do I need a different table for each key? Which one should I use if I'm playing Schoenberg or Webern? ;-)I actually apprec...
