Best affordable amp for Thiel CS3.6
Tom, it's above your price range ($4700), but I just got a pair of the new Rowland 201 monoblocks, which I am using with Thiel 2.4's. Very early impressions are favorable to the point of gaga. Makes my Pass 150 sound broken, which it definitely is...
TAS Total Victory Review
The review is also a great read, one of HP's better efforts in a while. I really like it when he struggles with getting a grasp on a component and it causes him to reassess things, which the Coincidents apparently did. It would have been interesti...
Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt, Joe Ely, Guy Clark
I saw those four guys here in Redwood City last year. A great night of music, including Neil Young being summoned out of the audience to do a song of his own. I thought Hiatt sort of stole the show, though. If you have a chance to catch him with h...
AMP for Panasonic XR45
I do have digital cable and TiVo, which may complicate things. The wiring options will be a daunting task if I take the HT plunge.
Kronos Quartet Recommendations?
They did a recording on Reference Recordings called In Formation. An audio buddy of mine has it on 45 rpm vinyl and, boy, is it stunning.
Physically awkward components...
You are right about the Pass Aleph amps. Nelson Pass is sadistic, that't the only possible explanation.
Question for Rowland aficionados
You use RCA to XLR adapters. Rowland sells them, Cardas, etc. Rowland claims no sonic penalty for going RCA via adapters vs. going balanced XLR, but who knows?
Adjustable-height speaker stands--comments/recs?
Except for the price, they look like just the ticket. Thanks.
AMP for Panasonic XR45
Perfect! Do you like it?
What steps forward were actually steps backward?
To Johnnatais's comments on timing, I want to comment, somewhat sheepishly because I know that what I am about to say borders on heresy or is at least un-PC in audio circles, that I wonder if the superb timing of cheaper systems (boomboxes, our ca...
AMP for Panasonic XR45
A dumb question from a home theatre dummy: Can this Panasonic be configured to do 3.1 channel? I don't have room for rear speakers (really, I don't) but could do a center and an LFE. I know that most of the HT receivers down-mix to two channels, b...
Most Refined? Plinius 102 - Bryston 4B - Pass 250
I agree that the sound was great in the Harbeth room and also in the Plinius room, where the SA102 was driving the Harbeth Super HL5's. Made we wonder about the TAS review of that amp. Made me want to get Harbeth speakers and then think about look...
Adjustable-height speaker stands--comments/recs?
Thanks everybody! The Usher stands have only a 10 cm adjustment, which is not enough. The Standesigns sound like the right idea (good price, too), but 30"-40" seems not quite right for the kinds of middle-sized speakers I want to try. Better would...
What steps forward were actually steps backward?
Good post, johnnantais. I find myself torn between wanting the impressive sound (and falling for it) and despairing that I am missing the musical forest for the trees. Audiophile and music lover, like Jeckyl and Hyde.
Initial GMA Europa impressions and a few questions
In their fully broken-in state, would you GMA and Europa owners describe these speakers as being forward sounding, i.e., front row perspective? I ask because I have heard so many great things about these speakers, and the Europas are so affordable...
