Why so many Sony Scd-1 for sale?
Sony just released a bunch of refurbished ones (they wait until all the regular stock is sold off)Another reason is the price is still high enough to 'get out' and still keep a lot of it's cost.An aside: RANT!!!: I am amazed at these posts about a...
Where to start? New to Analog
For a beginner, a used $30 Dual turntable with end of LP lift is good. The Ortofon Super OM20 is great at $115 as a cartridge. You may want a real audiophile turntable, but I would wait on that 'till you have a record collection and some money.LPs:...
Cd players with variable output?
Remember that Philips 880 was new in 1987... A 16 year old player is not worth a lot, no matter what mods. It's STILL really old for a CD player! (I had one when new... it was pretty good for it's day)
direct drive vs. belt drive?
I have one of each.A Denon DP-59L direct drive.. $800 new I paid $250, no cartridge. Got an Ortofon Super OM20 for it.A Dual CS7000 Golden One belt drive... $800 new, I paid $370 with a nice MC cartridgeThe belt vs direct is not a big issue. The to...
Should I leave my SF Line 3 SE on standby?
Standby is good even at that gap in use.I would definitely leave it in standby.
newbie seeking stereo system advice
Agree that biamping is not the way to go.If you like what you have, I would suggest sticking with it for awhile, and avoid the "tiny step upgrade path".Also avoid buying slightly better cables, Cables can be a big money pit for little gain until y...
Can any multi-channel amp be bridged?
Gunbie is right on. Some yes some no some it's amp suicide.Maybe slow and painful, or instantaneous with smoke and flames! You MUST find out from the manufacturer if the particular amp can or cannot. (and you CANNOT assume because one amp of a manu...
Where does a sellers responsibility stop?
I was working when it was being demo'ed. He saw it working. He took it away WITHOUT letting you do what you thought was proper. (removing the tubes)I say he is out of luck. The problem IS his.IF you feel like being a 'nice guy' and looking at it at...
Dimming extremely bright and annoying LEDs
The 'Sharpie' marker is best.I have used a black marker and just put a "dot" in the visible center of the offending LED. It dramatically cuts the glare, yet allows one to see that it is still on.If the dot does not quit do it, just make the dot a ...
What is more important ? Need some advice.
Run the Wadia at full vol and use a passive attenuator, or dump the expensive power cleaner. get a cheap one and the pre.I would think the passive attenuator would be the best all around choice at this point in time.If you can afford to sell the p...
Need to clean some cds
My usual method is to wash the CD first in room temperature water, then pat dry. (get any dust off, and tiny specks of "scratch-ola" off too!)I polish with tight oval motions from the rim to the center and back, not just perfectly straight back an...
Need to clean some cds
I found just the stuff!Meguiars "Scratch X"Automotive car finish fine scratch and swirl remover. It does wonders to TT covers. And cleans off scratches on Cds too. (I HAVE used it on CDs)Most important: the cloth you use must be 100% cotton and SOFT...
Stacking components?
I stack.Usually I try to leave extra space between by using 'TipToes' or thick rubber bottle stoppers, I also have a few sorbothane hemispheres. But some equipment is very cool even in use, and some of that stuff I have even taken the feet off and...
Class A preamp or Class A amp
Remember that class A runs very hot.And that most amps running in so called class A really run in class A only up to so many watts, when they glide into class AB.A "pure" class A preamp is pretty common, and you have a lot of choices... because th...
How warped can you get?
Play it.If the tonearm flies off the LP, THEN 'skip' trying to play it. The WOW from a warp is usually too low frequency to matter, unless you have speakers that play down to 0.5 hz or lower!!! If is is more like a roller coster, then maybe worry ...
