HiFi Tuning Fuses: Impressions and a Question
Even though I have a really hard time believing that a fuse can change the sound of your system, especially to this degree, I'm glad you like it. I haven't tried it so I'll take your word for it.The voltage rating is not related to it's resistance...
Very short speaker cable length recommended?
Ok Audiofeil, we can leave it at that. I don't need to contact your sources as I can put you in contact with other prominent designers that say the opposite. As I said, I do believe you when you say that some manufacturers recommend short cables. ...
Very short speaker cable length recommended?
Audiofeil, I'll stick with my assessment. You dismiss me as an amateur, but I also have many years of experience in multiple systems. I have friends in the industry with well regarded ears who tell me my system sounds excellent. That doesn't mean ...
L. Armstrong, glue prob, Complete Hot 5 and Hot 7
I actually had forgotten about this but a new copy arrived in the mail today from Sony. Evidently I wasn't the only one with this problem as they changed the package so they are in conventional, snap-in, plastic trays, not paper pockets.
Very short speaker cable length recommended?
Audiofiel, my conclusion is that you offer nothing but your opinion, which is based soley on the the opinion of others. In other words, you parrot what you read but have never tried it yourself. Conclusion: until you try it yourself, your unfounde...
Tubes and Rock and Roll, Can they go together?
You listened to 2 completely different systems. The only conclusions you can draw must pertain to the entire systems, not the individual components.Yes, tubes can rock.
USB-S/PDIF Converter or USB DAC?
Was this through a powered hub or just an extension cable?
Coupling Cap Values for a VTL ST150?
Your experienced modder should be able to provide this information. If he can't then you should keep looking. Here's one person's opnion http://www.humblehomemadehifi.com/Cap.html
Levinson 20.5 monos - Time for a Refurb?
oops, I had no idea it was worth that. A new variac is a few hundred. I would recap it if I was going to use it.
Levinson 20.5 monos - Time for a Refurb?
http://www.quadesl.com/pdf/cit2_capboard.pdfIf you stick with the old caps it is best to bring the voltage up slowly. You'll need a variac (variable AC) transformer to do this but unless you get a used one at a good price it will cost more than th...
Levinson 20.5 monos - Time for a Refurb?
They don't wear out but can lose capacitance sitting idle. However, once you start to use them again the capacitance builds back up. A cap that has been sitting with no charge for too long can short out if you apply full voltage all at once. This ...
Levinson 20.5 monos - Time for a Refurb?
What do you believe the life expectancy of a cap to be?That's the $64,000 question. I don't have a strong conviction either because it is impossible to put a number on it for any given capacitor. Naim recommends 10 years. Cynics say that is just t...
Levinson 20.5 monos - Time for a Refurb?
The last time I rebuilt a Super Reverb the guy kissed me after he played it. At least it wasn't on the lips. (I'll probably have one of those giant beer cans fall on me now) Find somebody who knows what they are doing and you will be happy with th...
Levinson 20.5 monos - Time for a Refurb?
Zaikesman, you say the caps "lasted about twice Unsound's 20 years." What that really means is they lasted that long without a catastrophic failure, either shorting out or losing so much capacitance that your amp started to hum. The amp works but ...
Levinson 20.5 monos - Time for a Refurb?
Common thinking, (old wives tale?) is that caps are good for about 20 years. What does that mean? Do you think they don't last that long or that they last longer. For all naysayers, if you do a little research you will find there is indisputable pro...
