Have You Ever Put Your Golden Ears to the Test??
paulwp, i'm highly suspicious of anyone trying to save me money when i don't hire them to do so - i really think their pushing their own agenda. while i respect engineers and scientists, as well as physicists, doctors, whatever, remember that scie...
What is a good intro to "Mahler"?
got any tough requests :-D normally i would recommend starting with symphony #1 and progressing thru #9. however since you want "life" and "fire" in great sound and performance, i would suggest starting w/#2 the Resurection Symphony, its got it al...
Have You Ever Put Your Golden Ears to the Test??
how exactly would you conduct a blind test? in my listening room? i have no problem detecting differences in any equipment i use, good or bad i'm not predisposed, but in an unfamilar environment there would be just too much new information to proc...
Sonic Relativism?
the flat earth society has been around for a long time and they don't confine their endeavors to audio. fortunately, because of the closed minded nature of their thinking they are not transparent and can be easily ignored. i believe in 1st amendme...
Which components produce a convincing 3-D image?
if your speakers can handle them a good tube amp can make a huge difference in creating soundstage. they only down side is that like a beautiful woman they require more maintenance than the ordinary (ss) ones. not for the faint of heart or the pic...
Stereophile "confirms" Moncrieff's SACD comments ?
I-O Sounds like i can start putting money back into my daughters college fund, no need to save it for sacd now. by the way, thanks for the compliment.
I can't really hear a big difference
dennis, i own two units, a BAT and a cal alpha/delta combo. they are very different as is your sherwood and BAT. i think you have fairly described how a BAT can sound if you are using the sherwood for a "reference". i could do the same for my two ...
Love for music shatter by highend equipment
personally, for those who are really in this hobby because of their love of music, i believe its all part of the learning curve. a lot of attention is paid to sound reproduction until deminishing returns set in and the attention then goes back to ...
Speaker Placement
FWIW the last time i set up planers i had them in a room 13.5x19.5 firing down the length of the room with the center of the panel about 2.5 ft from the side wall and the speaker about 4.5 ft from the back wall with the panel turned inward half wa...
CAL Alpha DAC - Cool Tubes?
i keep the top on - have newver had a problem with tube life. here's a thought on tubes on the cheap - try some yugo el12ax7s. they are cheap and have a very transparent high end. very clean. i prefer them. i don't have the converted model (24/96)...
Music to test with:
detlof, because i'm that kind of masochist - you should to see my back - i wear out a whip a week. by the way the operative word was "used" (in the penultimate sentence).
Music to test with:
here is a contrarian thought - instead of great sounding recording of music you love, use discs that you love but that have problems which can be excerbated by poor performing components, for example a disc with a high end that is almost too etche...

What's so bad about Sovtek 6922s?
tubes are very system dependent. if you can't hear a difference either your system doesn't resolve the difference or you are blessed. i suspect the latter. i use both the old sovteks (halo getter), the 6h23's, and the tesla's. the only ones i can'...
"EAR VS Cables"
both Twl and Tentrek have made excellent points. in my view cables are the big black hole for money. If you can't hear a difference then for you there is no difference. be happy with your system as it is and enjoy the music. don't let the salesmen...
