also...first order networks...such as Meadowlark and Vandersteen...are not designed for near field applications...the drivers overlap ...so a recommended distance of 6-8ft is optimal... 
any new Quad 11/12L owners?
The 12 has much more bass impact due to a larger driver/ larger cabinet and is more dynamic... and offers a wider soundstage...they both are extremely accurate and musical...if your room is very small go 11L...if not ...go 12L... 
Can speakers be both "big" and "accurate" ?
Vandersteens are known "huge spacious sound" and time/phase accuracy...at your price range the Vandy 3a will fill your room with sound...and bass to 30hz...not designed for loud party rock...but most hi end speakers arent...

Agree...I wouldnt get too carried with mods to the Swifts...they are only going to lessen their resale value if you ever upgrade...and adding felt around the tweeters is largely a myth...true..Spica tc-50s used felt...but their spacious sound was ...

I would also add the new Quad 12L monitors...made by a legendary company based on quality and performance...huge soundstaging, 3-imaging, incredible detail, dynamics,and tight, punchy bass...not to mention QUad speed and transparency...I have hear...

I would agree...Switching NAD amps is a lateral move at best...I would opt for an entirely new SS sound...I like Muscial Fidelity...or as some have mentioned...incorporate a "tube" sound in your system...such as a hybrid...good luck...also...I hav...

Often the high cost of modifying speakers...not to mention the uncertain outcome...is best applied to simply upgrading to an entirely new speaker...which exhibit some of the attributes one was looking to modify in their original speakers...

Any bafoon can throw around money...and often poorly...although many hi-enders will cringe...a good system is based on sound...not dollar signs...I will put my humble 2k system to the Pepsi challenge anyday...

Well the new Quads are often run with Quad eclectronics...which start at 2k for each componet...CDP and amp...this has to be the highest recommendation....
