My impression of VPI Scout
Sounds to me like your soul is searching for a direct drive deck: neutrality, smoothness and excellent PRAT (excuse me Ken--boogie factor!). Lak was here yesterday and while I was instaling a cartridge on his TT he got a chance to listen to my KAB...
direct drive vs. belt drive?
Steelhead, did you try the Ortofon X5 on the JVC? A friend of mine has one of those servo arm JVCs and was wondering how my Ortofon would perform in his deck. Thanks.

Here's more information. First, audio equipment is NOT an investment--that salesman is trying to grease you, Jsonic! Second, being aware of compromises, making educated choices and learning to live with them is a must. Let's use the example of the...
Mid/High Power Phono Cartridges
I don't know if this one will be compatible w/ the Rega tonearm, but for $125 you can get an Ortofon X5 MC (2.5 mV) from member 2Juki in Hong Kong ($325 US list price). I don't think that can be beat. I would get a small ONEAC isolation transforme...

I can see you read Bear's thread. Good for you. What I'm understanding since having the outboard power supply installed less than two weeks ago is that transients do require significant torque delivered instantly in the case of a quartz locked DD ...

Jsonic, you should be glad we've turned this discussion into a real, serious one looking at TT design parameters and constraints. If you search the archives you'll see it over and over--people just parroting away belt drive choices without any rea...

Albert, the stylus is *nude* to begin with!

"Other $1,500 tables might come closer of course, but I don't know any that would match it."I understand, very few people have a KAB modded Technics SL-1200MKII. The day before I took my 1200 to Kevin for installing the outboard power supply I was...

When Sean gets to hear my Creature on Steroids he'll end up getting an old SP-10, making a custom plinth and removing the linear tracking arm from the SOTA. My understanding of analog reproduction has changed a lot since I had the outboard power s...

The modded Groovemaster II KAB sells for the 1200 has the midrange of a $1,500 moving coil cartridge. It has absolutely NO midrange edge and the deep, solid bass and tracking of an integrated headshell DJ cartridge The performance is simply stunni...
midfi turntable cable: revealing vs. forgiving
The simplest you can do for that TT is to change the RCA jacks. To significantly improve the sound without having to do readjustments down the line would mean:1) cooking the whole wiring patch (headshell, tonearm, ICs). If you have a computer towe...

I have tried the DeZorel vs my Elgar medical grade regenerator. The Dezorel is one hell of a beast is all I'm going to say. It's just as good as the Clear Image T4--according to Lak. I will put up my regenerator for sale in eBay for I have very li...
Stereophile confirms new gear is getting worse....
What gear to buy? Go to AudioCircle's manufacturer's circle and you'll find more than a few smaller companies that are for the music. At the top of my list are Channel Islands Audio and now Modwright is producing gear. Dusty's approach is to deliv...

I think Pbb has very acute hearing and is probably noticing stylus drag/speed changes produced at the warp. You seem to me like a modded 1200 candidate, where the analog sound will approach closer that of CD, but w/out artifacts.
