Pass amp vs McCormack with Silver/Gold upgrades...
Hi John. Just to try something SS without really opening my wallet I just picked up a like-new B&K ST-140 (105w version 2). I know these are a bit weak in the bass and high end, but it will be an easily recovered data point. I waffled between ...
Pass amp vs McCormack with Silver/Gold upgrades...
John, thanks very much. Can you educate me a bit about the impedance matching issue with mating preamps with amps? Your system sounds really nice. I do agree the PV-5 is probably the weak link limiting clarity in my system. Uncle Stu (don't see hi...
McCormack DNA .5 vs 1, after revisions...
Wow, what a great read to go with my coffee in the morning, thanks, that was good. The real source is interesting too. You would find my environs a bit challenging, as I'm in the driest spot in the country supposedly, though I always think that ca...
Pass vs McCormack?
Unsound and Mcondon, thank you much for your comments. Unsound, that is the kind of very valuable appraisal we can only get from each other and the kind of thing that helps us know what we want.Mcondon, I suspect the X150.5 is a bit more than the ...

Thanks Swampwalker. BTW, I'm curious about the origin of that name.I have ProAc One SCs in a 11x12 room as I just said in another thread I started on Pass vs McCormack. I plan to get Tablette Anniverseries or Harbeth Compact 7s eventually. Listeni...
Pass amp vs McCormack with Silver/Gold upgrades...
Thanks John. I posted a long reply but it doesn't seem to have succeeded. In short, I read many comparisons in forums of X vs Y. These two amps seem to rarely be the less preferred in such discussions. I have ProAc One SCs, with a Marantz 8B and C...
Pass vs McCormack?
Swampwalker, that is a good idea. I in fact called SMC this week and didn't get Steve, but his partner (Chris?), who talked to me for a long time about the upgrade options. At times like this I just wish I lived in a big city. Jim

>> We hear all the time about how an amp compares way above its price range.Yes, isn't that the truth. If it's not better than amps twice its price, it's not worth the price being asked for it. :-)Jim
Pass vs McCormack?
OK, guess you're right. Thanks for the help. I tried posting this again, so guess we can ignore that one.ThanksJim
Pass vs McCormack?
Also, consider this...If I buy a DNA-1 for ~$800, and send it in for $1000 to $2000 of upgrades as I plan, it would in the price range of used, more powerful Pass amps.Jim

Thanks for your insightsTbromgard and Jebel. Jebel, thanks for taking the time for such a helpful reply; it's replies like that that really make me feel like I found an answer to an important question. I'll look for a stock DNA-1 soon.Jim
Pass vs McCormack?
Swampwalker,OK, pretend the price difference doesn't exist. Have you heard both and have any opinion as to relative sound character? Don't seem to be having much luck in this thread.
Pass vs McCormack?
Thanks. I do see Pass amps for 1500 or so used, which is not that different from McCormack DNA-1s for example. I think Pass Aleph 30s are an example...Jim

Thanks, Kal...wondered if that was you. We chatted neuroscience at Stereophile in LA in 95 I think. I was a lowly grad student then, am tenured now :-). Jim
XTC Room Analyzer
Thanks Kal. Yeah, the XTZ sounds like a good deal then. Can the standard one for a couple hundred to all that or do I need the Pro II model? I wouldn't relish learning how do code all that myself, even if the libraries are there in matlab.SM58s ca...
