Which is more efficient and requires less power?
Interesting. I'm awaiting delivery of a pair of 200wpc SS mono blocks, and it would seem they are 50% underpowered for my needs. Also, I wonder if it would be beneficial to run Zero Autoformers on my loudspeakers to double the 6 ohm nominal impedan...

Thank you, Joe, for such a thoughtful and comprehensive post.
Tube Integrated for Von Schweikert VR4 Gen III HSE
Sherod, I have tried both a Dominus Ferrox and Dominus Fluid on the Lamm LL2, and I preferred the Volex. Go figure.I've heard good things about Tubemonger...good quality at reasonable prices. Can't get any better than that.I have not received the ...
cables recommendation
I use MAS Signature Hybrid on my VR4 Gen III HSE. They sound excellent to me. However, because of my long speaker cable runs, I have not experimented with high priced cabling. If you are interested in trying the MAS Signature Hybrid, they are four...
Modwright 9.0se vs Cary SLP-98P
The Modwright throws a large image, and is very accurate sounding...very similar to solid state to my ears. It does not have a lush, warm or euphonic sound, although it does convey a three dimensional image common to tube preamps. If this is what ...
Which is more efficient and requires less power?
My real world experience does not agree with your numbers, Gs5556, because when I'm listening to Metallica measured at 101db (not at peak) at 8 feet from the drivers with an SPL meter, I have plenty of headroom remaining, and my PP tube amp is 110...
Which is more efficient and requires less power?
05-04-06: Gs5556Regardless of the speaker nominal impedance, impedance curves, or phase angles, what you will need at your listening position of 8 feet for an SPL level of 89 db is 90 watts for the 94 db/W-M speakers and 285 watts for the 89 db/W-...
What pre to use with Vons and Bryston 2B-SST?
Try a Lamm LL2 Deluxe and roll some tubes. Try Mullard, Brimar and Siemens. You'll get the full effect of what a tube preamp can do, and you'll be using a pre that is an absolute chameleon with tube changes.
Tips for warming up Rotel + B&W system?
I'd sell the whole rig and buy a Ping Pong table. Pocket the cash and adopt a hobby the whole family, and your friends will enjoy.

You might try something less powerful such as a 50/50 mix isopropal alcohol and a very soft cloth. That's a good suggestion, too, and it's something I have personally tried, unlike Goo Gone, which I have never tried.
Wood blocks underneath components?? snake oil?
That's a good point, Herman. I have noticed the effect you describe with highly microphonic tubes.
Which is more efficient and requires less power?
I sit 8 feet from the loudspeakers in a 19x16x8 foot room. I listen around 89-90db, and occasionally crank to ~101db. Classical to jazz to heavy metal. At the loudest volume, I'm using around 32 watts. My present speakers are the 89db/1w/1m in the...
Which is more efficient and requires less power?
The question of imedance drop is important. The 6 ohm speaker dips to 3 ohms. I don't know about the 4 ohm nominal speaker, which conceivably could dip lower than 3 ohms. The idea is to use a PP triode tube amp with a power output of 50wpc or less.
Which is more efficient and requires less power?
Duke's qualifier is interesting:Note that a few amplifiers might still be happier with the lower efficiency 6 ohm speake. This is telling, and why I posted the question. The 94db speaker is the obvious choice, but the more difficult load of the 94d...

I don't blame you for not touching the Partridge Family collection. It's pretty much sacrosanct around our house, as well.Seriously though, check out Goo Gone. It might do the trick.
