dead cartridge? Darn the Luck ! ! !


Old OM20 that I haven't touched in 20 years. Tried it direct thru my Onkyos phono pre. Nada.Then I tried an outboard NAD pre. Left only.
I swapped sides. Right only. Pre is OK.
I reseated the cartridge wires at the headshell, both sides, 4 pins.
Tested continuity from the cartridge wire through to the NAD input. All 4 pins good.
I know it's rare, but is there something I forgot? Seems I have a dead right side.

let right top bottom on the ortofon cartridges, re the pin locations, is not the same as US built and Japanese built cartridges.

It’s a real PITA some times, as we hook them up the same as other cartridges..and get what seems like a dead channel.

find a spec sheet for the om series and look at the pin out locations.

Or was it the color of the pins and their so called identification re the color? Yeah, I think that is the issue....

Basically, you might be using the two hots as a channel and then the other channel is using the two grounds. Your color identification of the terminals is correct, but....ortofon uses the colors differently.

nope. color and identification is fine. It is the orientation that is different. turned 90 degrees on the om series.

one channel is the the top two pins and the other channel is the two bottom pins. On the om series.

the 2m series is the same as the om series wiring, and only those two series are wired that way.

Which tells you a lot about the 2m series.

As a matter of fact, you can slip a 2m series out of it’s plastic case and slip it into a om series body. You can take a 2m black  cartridge body proper and put it in an om 5 plastic bit, and fit on a om 5-10-20-30-40 stylus. Not much point, though.
mine is color marked and I matched the config at the cart to the shell.You think I need to move wires to different pins then?
I can't find a wire diagram for my Philips AF 887 tt headshell. So I’m just guessing.
I managed to get both sides working, however they are out of phase.I know the speakers are wired right as I ref’d rcvr/tuner and TV.Here's a link to a photo of the shell if anyone has an idea which wire to flip, though I thought I tried all combos.

It doesn’t matter which channel you switch the phasing on. Left or right, choose one only and enjoy. 
Buy yourself a test record like Hi-Fi News Test LP to make sure your system works fine, you can check everything with this test LP (and there is a free protractor inside)
I had a new Ortofon Winfield that was internally wired wrong.....they readily exchanged it, ....stuff happens
this is way too old for warranty and it worked fine when last I used it ..... 20 year ago.

Kind of thinking now that lack of use, aging, whatever has messed it up inside.
Don’t think I’m dropping $50 for a test record. This is not my old 24 track Ampex 1200.
I tested another source thru the pre, the pre is fine.
it’s either me crossing wires or the cart failed with age.
From Ortofon tech supp:
"There are two possible reasons for channel missing or level differences:  the incorrect position (rotation - in front view) of your cartridge in the tone arm. The other is a defect in the cartridge itself caused by aging, rotation of the armature or shunt(s) between the turns of one coil. "

You can get the Shure TTR-110 test record on Ebay for about 10 bucks. It will have all the tests you need to check out your cartridge!

Your Philips head shell will likely be wired left side pins and right side pins, each top-bottom pair comprising a channel.


On the Ortofon OM series, the top two pins are one channel and the bottom two pins are the other channel.

Red is still right channel positive and white is still left channel positive.

green is right channel negative and blue is left channel negative.
@teo - as I thought.  I'll re-set to normal today and try try the phase flip again.  But I think the cart has just aged into an issue.I'll look for Shure.  Good idea.

I was on the phone with an audio bud, going thru everything.He asked "what input in the rvcr is the PP2 in?"Flash of light!  I switched to another input and all is well.Though this Onkyo rcvr is only 10 yo, perhaps the RCAs on the back are hand wired rather than PCB mounts, or there is some element of the rcvr that human hands touched and flipped the phase on the one input.Doink!
