Tonearms with no anti-skate adjustment
@lewm @cleeds If you put your thumb on the cartridge end of the tonearm and move the back of the arm up and down ( like VTA adjustment ), the counterweight tracks an ARC realtive to your thumb. The point I made was that If the arm starts at level t...
Tonearms with no anti-skate adjustment
@hdm Yes I agree - I always measure and set vtf with arm dead level and more importantly do the alignment with the arm level as well first. If the vta needs significant adjustment I recheck the alignment before doing dialing in VTF by ear. Its an ...
Tonearms with no anti-skate adjustment
@lewm So, to summarize my position, move pivot point down in the vertical direction and the set VTF goes down. Move pivot point up in the vertical, and the set VTF goes up. Not so - it depends where you start. If the arm is level, then moving the...
FR64s Dynamic or Static Balance
I use 0.75g dynamic and the balance static for my Koetsu Black & FR1mk3. I use precision scales for both - the markings on the dynamic balance knob are not accurate.
What about diamond cantilever/stylus combo
@nandric You are right to question providence, as there are many "unsubstantiated claims" in these forums, but unlike "some" the previous owner of my TT wrote for "The Absolute Sound", "Australian Hifi" and other audio magazines in the 80's. Resid...
What about diamond cantilever/stylus combo
@nandric I'm not bothered by cantilever material, the final arbiter is the overall performance in your TT/arm/system. FWIW the previous owner of my Final Audio Parthenon had both the Sony XL88D ( one piece diamond cantilever ) and Dynavector Nova ...
What about diamond cantilever/stylus combo
@chakster This is the only Diamond cantilever that i have. Is it one piece or two pieces ? 2 pieces plus glue
Denon DL 103 modifications and re-body questions thread
@lewm Lew,It's difficult to quantify what translates into what we can hear - but the lower internal impedance of most moving coils would suggest lower susceptibility to picking up extraneous noise. The real point of my post is that the higher curre...
Denon DL 103 modifications and re-body questions thread
My experience with the Denon 103 that I had rebuilt by the original Garrott Bros with a composite boron/aluminium cantilever and Weinz Parabolic diamond was positive. Although the resolution was not as high as my Koetsu Black Goldline, and far rem...
Denon DL 103 modifications and re-body questions thread
lewm6,481 posts11-30-2018 5:20amI agree with Chakster and Glen. And Rob, please explain why an MC cartridge would per se have a lower "noise floor" than an MM cartridge. I can't think of a justification for that generalization. In fact, the fac...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
So I guess I didn't spell it out clearly enough for some - T H E  "E I N S T E I N  T U R N T A B L E S C H O I C E" IS A MOVING COIL ONLY PHONO STAGE.THE ONLY POSSIBLE CARTRIDGES THAT IT COULD RUN OTHER THAN LOW TO MEDIUM OUTPUT MOVING COIL PHONO...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
@j2d2@lewmDon’t think the Einsteins Choice suits MM cartridges, too much gain and low impedance input. ( Highest input impedance is 470ohms or 940ohms in balanced mode. ) The only possibilities I can see for that phono would be the Soundsmith &...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
@chakster I have never heard the current P77i, only the first 2 iterations from the original Garrott Bros. Halcro I think has both old and new.@nandric I'm not sure I know enough for a full history, but I could consider adding Reto into the story....
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
@halcro And in @chakster s 2nd photo above the stylus assembly is from the P66 ( black body ). It is not a Microtracer as described on the packaging.https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/qBQAAOSw~SdbaWSA/s-l1600.jpgProbably someone upgraded a P66 to a P7...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
@halcro I suspect @chakster 's P77 is the original. It is not that rare - I have seen many samples that look identical to Chakster's P77 in Europe, US & here in New Zealand. It could also be the early P66 with the early P77 stylus. Now in terms...
