What's your favorite instrument to listen to....
Electric guitar w/ tube amp in a rock band, ala John Fogerty in CCR. That said, a good sax player that can make it growl and wail in a rock band is great too. In blues, the guitar again-- electric or acoustic, followed by a great harp blower.I lov...
Why aren't all CDs created equally?
Sugarbrie; good post. Poor digital recordings are a fact of life for reasons given above. My stereo system is all digital and the components/speakers are capable of high resolution, so to partially compensate for the many lousy recordings of other...
5 most recognizable voices in American music?
Per all the above excellent suggestions, I would delete "Babs" and Ray Charles from my top 5 list list and add Bob Dylan and Michael Jackson. To expand the list to top 10, I'd still include B. Streisand and Ray Charles and add Sinatra, Willie Nels...
Early 1970's rock: Name some of your favorites
Sean; I must have been in a coma or doing hard time during this period-- or most likely into C/W. Thank God CCR made it into the early 70s. Cheers. Craig
5 most recognizable voices in American music?
Hi Scott-- Your post helped better define what I'm trying to get at, ie distinctive, very well known singing voices-- thanks. I think it's easy to tell that you and I are from the same generation. I'm enjoying seeing others opinions on this, espec...
5 most recognizable voices in American music?
I thought this could be be a "generational" thing to some extent-- and my wife and I are pushing the 6th decade. As for the word "today"-- maybe a bad choice-- what I'm trying to get at are the most recognizable singing voices by the general publi...
Ok this will be a good thread.
I pretty much agree with Paulwp and Eagle. If my house burned down tomorrow, my stereo system was fully insured, and I got to buy a whole new system in a few months, I would start by purchasing speakers and amp first. All other components are just ...
Tube for vinyl & SS for CD?
Boy, what a "loaded" question! If you consider this a generalization, I think it's a very questionable one. The foundation(s) of high-end audio are personal preference and subjectiveness, IMO. Cheers. Craig
Unheralded Sideman
Zaikesman really nailed this one-- good post. Others that come to mind for me are Jim Keltner on Drums, and Ry Cooder on guitar-- especially slide guitar. I don't know if they're "sidemen" in the conventional sense as both have become somewhat mus...
Foolish
"Dyno-Supreme" Peter! I had a similar experience when I had a sub-main and 5 dedicated lines/outlets put in about 3 years ago. It's all important, but I consider the dedicated lines the foundation of my whole system. Outlets make a big difference ...
Center image on left side and don't know why
I have this problem too and concluded that in my case it is a room/speaker placement problem. My "center image" is usually 3-5 dB to the left of center (but it varies with music). I can center it by moving my listening position, but don't like thi...
Unheralded Sideman
I think it's fair to say that Margo Timmins is the "out front" star and voice of the Cowboy Junkies band. I don't know if he's considered a sideman or not, but her brother Michael Timmins is their lead guitar player and I think he's great-- some s...
Thinking about purchasing vandersteen 5's what's a
Because of their weight-- 225 lbs. each when packed on their own pallets, and the difficulty packing and shipping them, I think the Vandersteen 5s can be difficult to sell when shipping is involved. I'd guess that most are sold with some kind of l...
Where are you? Do you know what your FM is doing?
Coastal Oregon-- are you kidding? Although.......a college NPR station occasionally has some good blues programming, but not worth getting a good tuner for. We're more into salmon here: ). I do keep an old Adcom around for PAC 10 football games th...
Do you leave your SS amp on all the time?
Since I recently switched from a 300 wpc amp to a 100 wpc (both 8 Ohm), I leave it on and do not turn the voulume down. My amp only runs slightly warm. BTW, since I've been leaving the amp on full time, my stereo system sounds its best at all time...
