Upgrade Opinions, Thorens vs VPI
The most appealing aspect of the SoundSmith carts is the relatively low cost of retipping vs MCs. I've noticed cartridge prices are skyrocketing. Many carts cost 20% more than at this time last year.

Thanks tablejockey, The classic Signature was over my budget. I'm now considering a Soundsmith Carmen or Grado Sonata2 which would work with my current phono stage.
Ortofon Red on Thorens TP16 tonearm
The Shure M97xe with Jico SAS stylus is great with the TP16. The body of the cart required some minor filing along the screw recesses to achieve the arc alignment. It tracks everything with ease and once broken in, (about 50 hours) it sings.

Thank you Mat, that's good to know. Haven't taken delivery of the table yet, can't wait to get it spinning.Tablejockey,What kind of phono stage are you using?

Tablejockey,I think the Classic version I ordered has the DC controlled motor you mentioned earlier, so I won't be able to use a Phoenix, though apparently VPI makes something called an ADS speed controller that will work. It's not cheap. I've not...

I don't imagine the Classic will be sent back, but I think I'll likely keep the Thorens anyway and eventually it will get the Jelco arm, and end up in my second system. The Thorens paired well with my Epos Epics and Yamaha amp. My Pioneer will lik...

Thanks Mat!
The most transparent speaker cable
I recommend trying some Monoprice 12 gauge. Use some crimp on gold plated spades for the terminations and you might be surprised at how they compare to these alleged super cable brands.

I finally took the plunge on a VPI classic 1 SE in the walnut finish.Music Direct has them on clearance and I think it's a good deal at only $300 over a new Scout.I really like everything I've read about the Acoustic Signature Wow XL. I almost bou...

I have a Rogue Sphinx V2 paired with MA Silver 8s (rx6 lineage) and I'm very pleased with its performance. It's very detailed, dynamic and neutral. I used to have a Yamaha AS-500 paired with my MA speakers, it was able to drive them well with most...
Need Small Bookshelf Speakers With a Big Sound
I agree that Monitor Audio Silver 1s are worth an audition. For your preferences, I would check out the Epos Elan 10 or Elan 15. Both can produce astoundingly deep bass for their size and have a very neutral sound that pairs well with almost any ty...

Many reviewers claim the Rogue Sphinx's phono section alone is worth the price of the whole amp.

My Rogue Audio Shinx has a tube preamp stage, though the output modules are Hypex Class D, I'm pretty sure the class D portion isn't in the signal chain of the phono section (why would it?) so essentially it is a tube phono preamp, allegedly the s...
