Recommendations for improving visceral impact?
I agree with birdfan.Multiple subs would contribute to a more even distribution of bass impact, as well as more bass volume.
Preamps with separate L/R volume controls
My old Pass Aleph P had separate left-right volume controls.  Very good preamp.

Suggestions on a decent FM tuner with a variable headphone output?
The McIntosh MR80 was/is a well-regarded FM tuner, and it has a front panel headphone jack with a volume control.  They pop-up frequently on the used markets.
What area or country do you live in ?
Pasadena, California.  Relocated a few years ago from Princeton, New Jersey.  Love the SoCal weather.
The best speaker you ever heard?
Not the best, but most memorable. In a dorm room, pair of KLH 17s driven by Dynaco st-70 playing Doors Hello I Love You.  Punchy juicy sound, probably colored with distortions.  But, boy, I loved it.
Song covers that are better than the originals
Atlanta Rhythm Section cover of Spooky by the Classics IV.

The old Magnum Dynalab Etude or FT101's had three cool-looking meters and a digital frequency readout.  Not bad a a tuner either.
