Auralic Vega vs. Meitner MA-1 DAC
Yes. I've owned both. The Meitner is definitely better.
Lyra Delos A truth teller or what?
It sounds like the Delos is definitely not working for you, so time to move it on. While lots of people love it, it's not for everyone. The Cadenza Bronze should be a much more neutral cartridge than the Delos. I had a Cadenza Black and preferred ...
Lyra Delos A truth teller or what?
Where did you get the Van den Hul?   I bought the Black Beauty directly from a European dealer, and the Frog from a local dealer here in Australia.
Lyra Delos A truth teller or what?
It's difficult finding a cartridge with the right balance of virtues for your tastes.I have owned a Lyra Delos, Kleos and most recently an Etna SL. I sold all of them within a relatively brief time. The Etna SL was obviously the best and it did no...
Lyra Delos A truth teller or what?
The Lyra Delos is a bright, lean cartridge with an exaggerated top end. It might improve a bit as it runs in, but if you don't happen to like that sound, then it is unlikely to get better. Try a Benz instead.
Tube rolling for EAR 912
I have an EAR 912 preamp and 890 power amp, as well as the HP4 headphone amp and the EAR Dac 4 (although I generally use my Chord DAVE instead). As soon as I got the preamp I started tube rolling. I tried Telefunken, Phillips and a bunch of other ...
Kuzma Stabi S and 4point? overkill?
I have the Ref 313 (non-VTA) arm on my Stabi S, but I also have the Ref 313 VTA on my Stabi Reference. You are correct that the VTA versions can be used on turntables which only allow for 9 inch arms. The non-VTA versions allow for VTA adjustment t...
Kuzma Stabi S and 4point? overkill?
I have been using a Stabi S with the 12 inch Stogi Reference arm before upgrading to the Stabi Reference turntable. The Stabi S is a superb turntable, and it is much better than its price and appearance would suggest. I preferred it to the much mo...
The Harbeth phenomenon
I use a 70 watt EAR 890 tube power amplifier with my Harbeth 30.1s. It sounds spectacularly good. This amplifier replaced a pair of solid state Exposure 16 monoblocks which produced 140 watts. The tube amps sound much better.
MONO cartridge recommendation
I've just listened to the Martzy LP of the Mendelssohn concerto with Kletzki on Coup d'archet. First, the Etna SL (with and without mono switch engaged), then the Shelter 501 mono, then back to the Etna SL.It wasn't even close. The stereo Etna SL ...
MONO cartridge recommendation
Actually, it would make more sense to compare the LPs using a Shelter 501 mono vs a Shelter 501 Stereo with the same phono stage. The only variable then would be mono vs stereo version of the same cartridge. Fortunately, I have both versions of th...
MONO cartridge recommendation
folkfreak, I am a little embarrassed to say that I have hardly listened to the Martzy set, even though it is the most expensive LP set I own! I haven't done a serious mono/stereo comparison, so I will make some time this afternoon to do that, with...
MONO cartridge recommendation
lewm, as I mentioned, the information I provided was based on reading from a number of forums over the years. There are quite a number of discussions of mono recordings on the Steve Hoffman forums (as there are here) and Steve (who is probably as ...
MONO cartridge recommendation
My mono cartridges are Lyra Dorian Mono, Audio Technica AT33 mono and Shelter 501 mono. My understanding is that these are "true mono" cartridges in that they only respond to horizontal stylus movement, although the styluses are still vertically c...
Computer Speakers
I was in a similar situation recently and bought some Genelec 8010As which sit on my desk. They are tiny, and sound very good for their size. As long as you are not expecting deep bass or a massive soundstage, they are highly recommended.
