Record is noisier after cleaning:
One thing occurred to me that hasn't been mentioned. Don't forget to brush the felt pads on the vacuum pickup tube of the VPI after each record (or every 2 or 3 depending on how dirty they are). I learned that lesson the hard way. I forgot to do t...
Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 6 RCA Living Stereo SACD
Hello Beatnik, I have the RCA Tchaikovsky 6th. My copy has the correct layer for SACD. However, mine also has a defect. When playing the SACD layer, it is prone to "freezing up". It just stops playing. And it happens at random points, so I can't d...
What would you chose?
I'd ask her to, rather than upgrade a component, sign you up to receive the 45rpm Blue Note reissue series. Sure, we audiophiles love our components, but any lasting memories of your wife's love for you would be better imprinted by, and associated...
Typical upgrade path from VPI?
What I might try if I were you is this...Just get a $50 Audio-Technica cartridge and see if it sounds better. If it does, then there's something very wrong with your cartridge or MC phono stage. There are just too many of us VPI owners who know tha...
Installing a VPI stainless steel ring?
Yes, you put an LP on the platter first, and then you lower the ring clamp onto the platter. The clamp will sit on the outer edge of the LP, causing it to be pressed flat. I'm not sure what the rubber belts are for. Probably a damping mechanism fo...
Anyone NOT like the sound of VPI?
Lowering the tonearm at the base (my suggestion) will increase the bass, but go too far and you'll lose the mids and highs, so be careful. Also, adjusting the VTA will affect your VTF, so re-measure that when you are done. Before adjusting, attemp...
VPI SSM with Rim Drive - New belts ???
Use thread or fishing line. Some VPI users replace the nitrile belts with them and proclaim it superior (I've never tried it). Check other threads for the exact type of material used. Hope you're up and spinning on Labor Day! Tom
Scoutmaster runs very slow
I read the last two posts. Two things:1) Yes, you can dial the SDS up until you get to 33 1/3, but something is still wrong for the speed to be off by that much. I think it's worth getting to the bottom of. However, while you're debugging the prob...
Scoutmaster runs very slow
Which motor do you have? If it's the standard 300 rpm motor that fits into the cutout section of the Scoutmaster plinth, make sure it is about 1/4 inch (check manual to be sure) from the plinth. If it already is that far, try moving it out just a ...
Anyone NOT like the sound of VPI?
I'm surprised that nobody, from a quick look, has suggested what seems to be the obvious problem: VTA. Lower the base of the tonearm a little and see if you get your bass back.Cheers.Tom
Help choosing a new cartridge
Well, if you apply the following formula: rf = 159 / sqrt((7.7+.5+cw)*cu)) where cw = cartridge weight and cu = complianceyou should ideally get an rf (resonant frequency) number between 9 and 11. 7.7 is the effective mass of the JMW9 standard arm...
Help choosing a new cartridge
Do you have the JMW9 standard or signature model? The JMW9 standard has an effective mass of 7.7g and the signature model's effective mass is 9.5g. Makes a big difference in terms of cartridge compatibility.
Great Cartridge for Graham Phantom
My opinion... Geez, I can't really give one. I think a cartridge really can complement or detract from the rest of the reproduction chain. And I don't have any of the other components that you have. But I'll give my impressions of a few cartridges...
VPI Rim Drive vs. belt drive sound files
I listened to Epuipoise. Rim Drive wins by a wide margin. Individual notes occupy their own space in a way that the other version just doesn't accomplish. I'm actually struggling with this upgrade myself, at the moment. I'm trying to get the same ...
Low Cost Turntable
I would personally choose the Rega. But they're all good machines. The Rega has a better tonearm than the MMF or Technics. Also, the MMF might come with a cartridge already mounted. If you already have a cartridge, you might not want to pay for an...
