Best sounding MFSL LP
I agree with Slaw-"Ziggy Stardust" is great. Then again, itwould sound good even on a wax cylinder. One of my favorites is Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat". One more-"Ricki Lee Jones," self-titled first album.
Triplanar VII and Benz LP-S
That's why I love to read these threads; you learn what to consider buying, and what to AVOID buying.
SONY SCD-1 CD/SACD Player
Thank you for posting this thread. I had considered buying an SCD-1 or an SCD-777 but this thread, and others beforeit, have convinced me to look elsewhere. I currently have aCDP-R1/DAS-R1 combo without any issues. Despite the "Builtlike a tank" a...
What are your favorite SACDs and why?
I refuse to buy SACDs of albums that I already have on vinyl, cassette and CD. However, to answer your question Ilike "Blue Country Heart" by Jorma Kaukonen. It's very bluegrass, singer/songwriter stuff that I like. I also agree with both choices ...
12AX7 tubes for Music Reference RM-10
I really like the sound of tubes but after reading this thread, I think it sounds too complicated to buy used tubegear. Thanks for stemming my tube neurosis even before it gets started.
Cable Recommendations for Entry Level
I agree with Jdombrow about buying used cables (here on Audiogon). You can find affordable cables from Tara Labs, Kimber or even Monster Cable that will improve your currentR/S wire.
Is there any bad sounding high-end gear--?
As prices of products go up, so does your level of expectation of what you get for you money. Personally,I think any speaker over 25K is overpriced regardless of the performance (unless the voice coil is solid gold).Hey, it's just a speaker! Howev...
Sonus Faber speakers
Yes! Banana plugs work best.
Headphone Tutorial
Here we go again. For my money, be sure you check out a pair of STAX headphones with it's dedicated tube driver unit. Used ones make perfect sense. Expensive, yes, but worth it.
Headphone amp and headphones... ?
I can't believe how long this thread continues. Lots of good information here. I doubt that someone who asks forheadphone advice on an Audiogon Forum is interested in DIY solutions. I only added my two cents about STAX as I have lived happily with...
Headphone amp and headphones... ?
Obviously, this thread produced many opinions. My responseabout the Stax headphones was motivated by a desire to save you a lot of time, expense, and maybe some regret. Try any of the dynamic phones listed above before you listen to the Stax. Then...
Headphone amp and headphones... ?
I've said it before, let me say it again. Buy a used pair of Stax electrostatics with it's dedicated driver unit. Iheartily recommend the tube driver units. For $1500 you canfind a pair on Audiogon. You will never regret it. The Stax phones create...
The Best Audiophile Earphones headphones and Amp
IMO, you won't find better than the Stax. I've owned many pairs of headphones so this is not just my ego talking. Allothers feel and sound like headphones. Stax create an ambientspace over your ears but without the distractions that plagueloudspea...
Phase inverting problem
Phase inverting...whose idea was that? Clearly, I'm not an electrical engineer but who in their right mind wants to reverse leads on their cartridge or change the wires on their speakers just to play a record. If phase inversion can't be done with...
Do people buy MAC gear for the blue meters
The simple answer is "Yes" but let's be fair. McIntosh is one of the few high end companies that have survived thevolatility in the electronics business. Their products are well-made, timeless and prized by collectors even many years after the mod...
