Here's the answer to the question:

There is no answer. The closest approximation to the answer is whichever player makes you happy, gets you off the merry-go-round, and allows you to focus on the music rather than the equipment, regardless of the method the player uses to get the music off the silver disc.

Guys I happened to come across this interesting transcript of a well known high end audiophile manufacturer's annual board meeting. They are discussing how much to charge for the "best CD Player money can buy". It starts with a proposal by their CEO.
