| How come there is no thread on the RealityCheck? I met Gary Koh at RMAF in October in Denver. Nice guy. He even gave me some black CD's to try. I am purchasing a CD writer that he recommended and I'm planning to mod it with Superclock3 and battery power, as well as digital mods. CD's written wit... | |
| new updates in transports or are they obsolete ? Look for a White-Paper that I wrote on positive-feedback.com that explains why computer driven audio done well will always beat a conventional transport. Why waste good money on a transport? | |
| Audiophile USB to PCM "At the moment, what you suggest seems like the way to go: PC card outputting upsampled digital via AES/EBU, with card driven by DAC wordclock."The problem with PC add-in cards is the PC power supply and grounding. The external box will be quieter... | |
| Audiophile USB to PCM No, I use ASIO .dll with Foobar and the Transit drivers. I upsample to 24/96 using SRC. I've tried other sample rates, including 88.2. They just dont sound as good as SRC at 24/96, particularly piano, which sounds very live. | |
| PC audio tweaks? Power the waveterminal from battery. These other tweaks will pale in comparison. | |
| Substitute for Waveterminal U24 Empirical Audio Off-Ramp Turbo, based upon Transit.http://www.empiricalaudio.com | |
| Mono blocks-High current/low impedance...options? Look at the freq resp. plots in the Stereophile review. Parasound Halo JC-1's. Also can be modded. | |
| best way to convert a sdpif to aes ??? Get it modded to do it right. It should be isolated and 110 ohms output impedance. | |
| DAC with remote for input select? This one also does it:http://www.inday.com/da4x/da4x.htmI modded this one. None of these switches are really audiophile quality. They will add considerably to the jitter. I had to gut the entire thing and start over.Steve N.Empirical AudioManufact... | |
| Looking for an incredibly dynamic preamplifier Dynamics are only delivered if the power delivery is done right, with the right wiring, circuit board layout and with the right types and brands of capacitors. Nothing stock except maybe NAIM or Spectral comes close IMO. | |
| Soundcards with wordclock input Wordclocks do not eliminate jitter. They may improve it, but the effective solution is a clock inside the DAC, not external.Steve N.Empirical AudioManufacturer/modder | |
| WHAT WOULD CAUSE JC-1 MONOBLOCK TO SELF DESTRUCT? Excessive DC can be caused by a DAC that is direct-coupled or even a preamp that is out of whack. | |
| WHAT WOULD CAUSE JC-1 MONOBLOCK TO SELF DESTRUCT? Angela - the bias pots can actually drift, or a component can fail to cause high bias currents.DC on the inputs can cause the amps to shut down as well. You should measure the DC on the outputs of the preamp. If it is more than 15 mV, this is too ... | |
| Best DAC under $2K The Benchmark DAC-1 in it latest version is hard to beat. Comparables are: Stello and Northstar. The Northstar has I2S input which can be a great advantage if you plan to use a USB to I2S converter later with your computer. I do not make any of th... |
