Which speakers will fill 5,000 cubic ft coherently
The big Sound-Labs would love a room like yours.
Classical vinyl - Good sources of info and talk
Rushton, thankyou! I had stupidly forgotten about your excellent contributions, stupid, because I had profited from them quite a bit a few years back.Ajahu, agreed, but it is bliss to have the best of both worlds.
Classical vinyl - Good sources of info and talk
The trouble is, apart from not knowing your listening preferences, that the quality of the reissues varies and I used to know a lot of people, who preferred the originals to all the different reissues. Prices of the old Shaded Dogs or Mercuries ha...
best transport for ... 2008?
The best transport 2008? Well, is NO transport IMO. Rip your CDs to your laptop, get a "Spoiler" USB DAC from Empirical Audio and enjoy. Or if you want to save money and use your own DAC, get a Trends Audio or Hagerman USB/ AES/EBU converter, link...
SRA Silent Running Audio vs Critical Mass System
Well Larry, perhaps I'm naive, however in that case all the exhibitors at the last CES, who used the SRA devices must be members of the same club as well as quite a number of reviewers who liked them. On the other hand I agree with you now, consid...
SRA Silent Running Audio vs Critical Mass System
I cannot speak for Wellfed, but I'm pretty sure he did not mean that the products you mention are snake oil. He is just pointing out two more products, which will probably serve you just as well at much lesser cost. At least I would understand it ...
Amplifiers:A Keeper for Life. Do you know of one ?
Atma-Sphere MA2 MkIII
What's the worst high-end set-up you've had?
A complete Gryphon system, cables and all, on loan from a dealer. Didn't work with my Quads and Sound Labs I had at the time. Dead, lifeless, edgy, but very hifi.....)-:
Are tube watts equal to solid state watts?
On the one hand a watt is a watt. There is no way around it.On the other hand, driving a tube amp into clipping is by far a less unpleasant experience as is the case with solid state amps, where, when they reach their limits, the sound breaks up, ...
The best speaker you ever heard?
Fcrowder, actually they use a pair of sub bass boxes of German origin, the name of which eludes me. They are servo controlled and cleverly adapt to the sound field in the room. Don't ask me how, but if you switch them off, the entire soundstage in...
Best bang-for-buck purchase you have made?
A "Trends Audio" USB to AES/EBU converter for about 200 bucks to attach my laptop to my Zanden DAC. A bit more expensive than the Hagermann, but creating less listener fatigue after long listening bouts, for reasons I still have to find out....
The best speaker you ever heard?
Tbg, no I don't. Friends of mine have, so I'm very familiar with their sound and I like them. What I have however, and most probably you've got the idea from there, is a a pair of aCapella plasma tweeters sitting on top of my Quads.Ohjoy, I couldn...
Amplifiers:A Keeper for Life. Do you know of one ?
Cventura, I think your reasoning is very sound, only I woudn't say better, I would rather say "different", because after you've reached a certain level, close to the state of the art, you'll certainly find differences in the overall rendering of m...
The best speaker you ever heard?
MrT never fails to delight me. In one sense he always points out the obvious. We would have to be utter fools or simply nutheads not to know, that most of our judgements are subjective, in another sense he is just a tad off the mark, because if we...
Anyone recommend a neutral tube amp?
Denjo, what I meant was, that the idea that tube amps were warm and coloured was a thing of the past, not tube amps per se. I have nothing but tubed gear in my rig.
