Trying to get back into Lps, I seem to be throwing
Rauliruegas...Some people think that a transformer is a "purer" way to get gain than an active circuit. Six of one and half a dozen the other. All I know is that the Signet transformer which I used performed very well indeed, which was contrary to...
tube watts vs solid state watts
The clipping characteristics of tube and ss amps do differ, and tubes do sound less harsh and do less harm to tweeters. However, except in Pro sound applications, anyone who, on a regular basis, drives their amps into clipping is simply using the ...
tube watts vs solid state watts
Loudness relates to Gain (Volts out per volt in), not to power rating which is simply the maximum that can be output without unacceptable distortion. A low power amp, perhaps a tube amp, with a high gain will play louder, for a given setting of th...

Powers55...I hadn't tumbled to the fact that you have a MC pickup plugged into a MM input. You do need a different phono preamp, but perhaps not the multi-kilobuck kind. Why not try a MC transformer, inserted between the pickup and your existing p...
Are first order crossovers best?
Blindjim...I think you got your answer in the first couple of responses, but they raised interesting points that have been the basis of ongoing discussion. That's the nature of this forum. Merry Christmas, or whatever.
Do long interconnects degrade sound?
Albert...0.17 ohms for a line level output!! Are you sure? That sounds like the power amp.
SPL METER? ATI OR RADIO SHACK
Tbg...For guys like you I promote the DEQ2496 purely as a spectrum analyser (and let nature take its course when they get their hands on it). Actually, if you have digital to input to the DEQ2496, and can take digital out, there is nothing in the ...

Powers55...If you have not used the phono preamp for many years the components in the RIAA equalization network may have changed so that the frequency response is as you describe.Cranking up the volume control is no problem. All it means is that t...

Hi Nrchy. Don't like the message? Trash the messenger. That approach never convinces me of anything.
SPL METER? ATI OR RADIO SHACK
Tbg...FWIW, the DEQ2496 RTA is 1/6 octave. The graphic equalizer is also 1/6 octave, and there is also capability to do parametric equalization if that turns you on.

Perhaps your expectations regarding vinyl are too high. "Disappointment" is exactly what I try to forestall by my comments to which some guys take great offence. (Hi Albert :-))Its good points are not the same as digital, and take a lot more money...
Do long interconnects degrade sound?
Albertporter...Do you really think 600 ohms is a low output impedance? 600 was typical of tube preamps (12AU7 cathode follower) but I have heard that some modern tube units are down to 200 ohms or less. Solid state typically runs 50 ohms or less.I...
Strange thingie in power cord of used Adcom amp
Actually, these loops are often a "retlif" ("filter" backwards) and their main purpose is to prevent your equipment from putting noise on the power line. They are often necessary for the equipment to pass muster with regulators.

I played around with the RS meter and the Rives CD. It was a lot of work, and hard to be sure of results. So I went looking for a spectrum analyser. Couldn't find one for less than two grand...until I stumbled over the Behringer DEQ2496. The spect...
Are first order crossovers best?
Unsound...We don't separate them. The full range advocates don't like to admit that their drivers break up, and emit different frequencies from different parts of the cone, and this constitutes a mechanical filter. If you think that design of an e...
