Horn based loudspeakers why the controversy?
You missed all that jazz about acoustic centers, edge diffraction, and directionality? If you're listening to a pair of Klipsch, you're listening to a speaker that incorporates every failing he points out.
Horn based loudspeakers why the controversy?
@wolf_garcia Siegfried Linkwitz is the guy out there making foolishness out of all the "narrow dispersion is good" silliness. Maybe it's good in a PA, but not a living room. This crowd here deliberately avoids and ignores anything that disagrees w...
B&W.....Focal.....or Focal
If you're looking at Focals in that price range, who not consider the Kanta No.2?
New system has fatiguing, harsh high frequency sounds. How to fix?
@mtrot A good example is the 32 watt Pass F5 I built. @artemus_5 See above. I'm sure it must make a lot of folks feel real knowledgeable and experienced having spent a fortune on heaps of gear over the course of decades. I'm over here ripping stuf...
New system has fatiguing, harsh high frequency sounds. How to fix?
I see nothing but high bias class A solid state amps in my future. According to the NRC, Davis-Besse is operating at 100% tonight so I'd need a microscope to see the amount of fuel leaving the F5 on all weekend consumed.
New system has fatiguing, harsh high frequency sounds. How to fix?
@artemus_5 Since you seem to like taking to people who know better than you to task, I'll correct you. Watt for watt, thermionic valves are most definitely the most expensive power you can buy. Valves are also the most inefficient, even moreso tha...
New system has fatiguing, harsh high frequency sounds. How to fix?
@rockadanny I wouldn't consider somebody who makes such blanket statements very knowledgeable. That kind of statement is hardly a rule and there is no shortage of amps that prove that wrong. Tubes are typically simple topologies. Any simple topolo...

Focal Aria 936's. I started out powering them with a 40 year old recapped Marantz. Last year I built a muscled up Pass F5 which is a very good match to them. When I began building the amp I'd planned to immediately follow that up with a unity gain...
Horn based loudspeakers why the controversy?
@johnk Again, you're trying to make me say things I never said and I'm getting tired of your flagrant intellectual dishonesty. You say I don't understand how these things work. Have you never looked at the dispersion plot of a horn speaker? They'r...
Horn based loudspeakers why the controversy?
Are we now establishing here that speakers that exhibit confined directionality and stunted bandwidth are undesirable for high fidelity? If not, I'm confused by this. There's no shortage of speakers or designers bending over backwards with shapes ...
Horn based loudspeakers why the controversy?
@johnk Oh yes... Uncle Sam has been beating down the door at Meyer Sound to get their hands on Meyers long throw array technology like the sort installed at OSU stadium used to shoot sound across the horseshoe.... Without horns. Sometimes that's u...
New system has fatiguing, harsh high frequency sounds. How to fix?
I too am on a budget over here. The speakers I've got are really the prize pieces of the stereo cost-wise and I picked them for their sound AND the fact that they're extremely revealing of upstream gear. That characteristic suggests a very high de...
Horn based loudspeakers why the controversy?
@johnk Inventing your own definitions for words to make me say things I never said is pretty transparent and cheap. The basic concept of directional speakers is widely contested for a plethora of reasons. That's a very widely understood reality. T...
Horn based loudspeakers why the controversy?
@johnk No offense bro, but you don't seem to understand the definition of the word "logic". If JBL and Klipsch horns are out there owning the hi-fi market, why can't I find a dealer with a search warrant? Logic suggests if I can't find them, nobod...
New system has fatiguing, harsh high frequency sounds. How to fix?
@mtrot Well, that would be unfortunate. My buddy with the pile of RTi stuff powers his with a big honkin Onkyo and they're still bright and wildly out-classed by the upper level Polk center he bought. He can try throwing all the audiophile myths, ...
