The "great" sound of reel to reel explained
Wow - Atmasphere, as usual you have made a great contribution to this site!! Fantastic info! You are very, very good at describing things that (as a musician) I can hear but cannot explain adequately to others as I do not have the technical knowle...
"They are here" vs. "You are there"
Hi guys - I think, after reading the latest posts, that Cbw is probably correct when he says "about the ambience cues in the recording. The primary signal in the music is generally going to dominate, and the cues are softer, lower SNR, and more di...
"They are here" vs. "You are there"
Hi Bryon - once again, you and Al and Cbw and Dgarretson have provided some excellent posts with much food for thought! Let the speculation continue, indeed! I have really enjoyed reading all of it, and you are certainly correct that although very...
Anybody own any direct-to-disc LP's?
Most all of the ones I own/have heard sound great. Al's recommendation of Sheffield Labs is a great place to start.
Entry into HiFi
Yes, choose your speakers first, though I would definitely go the high-efficiency route myself!
"They are here" vs. "You are there"
Bryon and Al, you both make some very interesting points! In general, I agree with most all of them, particularly Al's. Regarding this bi-directional vs. omni-directional subject, though, I do think it is very important to remember that in a good ...
Anyone got and album database for iPhone?
Onemalt, could one speed up the data entry process by copying and pasting, or will I have to retype my entire database? I do have good typing skills, but would rather not retype everything if I didn't have to. I might be willing to though, if it m...
"They are here" vs. "You are there"
Hi Newbee - I didn't take that comment personally, I just felt like responding to what is after all a very common comment made here on this site. You are by no means the only person who has made such a comment. I'm not offended by it, I just see i...
"They are here" vs. "You are there"
Hi Bryon - we are generally in agreement here. Where I would differ with you would be on the subject of the listening room being much of a factor at all in picking up what you are calling "ambient cues" in the recording. The listening room is of c...
Anyone got and album database for iPhone?
Sebrof, is it true that Collectorz only works for items with bar codes? This would be of no use for my LP collection if so, which is what I really want it for. I do catalog in Excel, but there is no way to transfer that to my iPhone that I know of.
"They are here" vs. "You are there"
Hi Bryon - I have just read through this entire thread now, and there are alot of very good comments by you and Al and many others about the effect of the listening room, ambience cues, etc. I would agree with most of it. However, I also agree wit...
"They are here" vs. "You are there"
Hi Bryon - you have once again started a very interesting thread indeed, and while I have not yet been able to read all of it yet (which I will do as soon as I get a better chance), I do have one immediate comment on the recording aspect, somethin...
Anyone got and album database for iPhone?
That would indeed be a VERY useful item, wish one existed!
best AVR for dual use in HT/music?
I ran a Harmon Kardon AVR for years, they are definitely built well and sounded good. They do run hot, though, as someone else said, and as I did not have it adequately ventilated at the time, it eventually crapped out on me. I have saved it in ca...
Klipsch Chorus or Cornwall II
If your budget is $1200, that is more than necessary for either Chorus or Cornwall (used, of course). I agree with Flemke that $850 is too much for the Chorus. I love my Cornwall II's, which often go for around that amount or a little more.
