What is the best 6SN7 driver tube?
A wealth of info here: (http://www.dehavillandhifi.com/6sn7_vt.htm). I found their results very accurate, having tried the top 10 favorites of the survey in my Cary monoblocks. The 1940's, bottom gettered Sylvania VT-231/6SN7GT, is a VERY nice(tra...
What's the oldest piece of gear in your system?
The TungSol round plate 6SN7GT and tall bottle Sylvania 6SN7W tubes, used as phase splitters and drivers in my Cary monoblocks, were manufactured in the early 1940's.
Are audiophiles people of sound prejudice?
ONLY if you think YOUR priorities are the ONLY right ones! Mine ARE, in MY listening room. Natural and balanced ARE, in the venues I set up(according to my clients).
Are film capacitors directional?
If you plan on getting serious about your electronics: Bite the bullet, and buy a Fluke(http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fluke-114-True-RMS-Multimeter-/250994535268?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a7070ab64). The 114 will resolve down to 0.1mV. I've ha...
It's Hammond B3 Organ Day
Maybe I'm showing my age, BUT- has anyone heard of Jimmy McGriff? I saw him live, many times, in Cleveland, O., Back in the 60's. Some samples, here; (http://music.yahoo.com/jimmy-mcgriff/albums/mcgriffs-blues--202254777) Jimmy Smith played some o...
Shielding components from EMI/RFI... Help please
A simple(but efficacious)solution. Happy listening!
Shielding components from EMI/RFI... Help please
The TI Shield, that I mentioned earlier, will block all RFI/EMI and is VERY easy to work with(thin enough to cut with scissors, and bendable).
SDS speed control
Shakey- Belt slippage doesn't have to be, "severe" to show with a strobe/disc and not everyone can discern minor speed/pitch variations aurally. The OP did say, "a slow spin to the right."
Are film capacitors directional?
They are not polarized(as electrolytics are), but- YES; there is a preferred direction, with regards to orientation. Some helpful insights: (http://jimmyauw.com/2010/04/24/observing-inner-and-outer-foil-of-some-popular-capacitors/) (http://www.aud...
Why do NOS Tubes sound better than new tubes?
Don't write EVERYONE that manufactures tubes off, just yet! These guys are making some VERY nice tubes currently: (http://www.euroaudioteam.com/en/products-000002.html) Much can be done with excellence(even these days), IF you take pride in your c...
SDS speed control
Have you changed, or applied talc to your belt & lubed the motor lately? Cleaned the circumference of the platter and pulley, with alcohol? If your belt is slipping significantly; no amount of correction from the SDS will help.
the meaning of the word "better"
Of course, "better" is subjective, and(by definition), "different." To me; If it(whatever has been changed) sounds more like what I hear, listening to live music; it's, "better!"
An affordable step up from AR SP14 is?
I owned one for a number of years, and was quite happy with it. Find a NOS, pre-mid 60's Siemens CCa(no internal date code/grey plate under getter support), or(at least) an E188CC. It's very easy to install an IEC socket in the SP14 chassis, which...
Conrad Johnson PV11 Noise Issues
Yes- retube! Be certain that whatever tubes you buy are certified/graded as, "preamp/phono/low noise", "gold" or "Platinum" by a reputable and knowledgeable dealer. ie: (http://www.upscaleaudio.com/pages/Testing-Small-Signal-Tubes.html)
digital vs vinyl thoughts
How can anyone expect to resolve this issue, given the plethora of variables involved? ie: vinyls obtained at garage sales vs "audiophile" quality pressings, MM vs MC vs MI vs strain gauge cartridges, the quality or lack thereof of cabling/systems...
