Confused about compliance matching with airbearing
Its high compliance=low mass and low compliance =high mass in all the arms I have used. The higher the compliance the lower the mass of the arm should be, I don't see why air bearing arms would be different but I have not used them.
tube watts vs transistor watts?
I was over to my tech friends house this morning, he has over 30 years experience and has had published articles in DIY mags on the design of TUBE equipment. I told him about your statement that a 200 watt amp would give 10% distortion at 210 watt...
VPI Scout to Michell Orbe SE
I had the wrong Michell model in mind, too much stuff out there these days.
tube watts vs transistor watts?
That is not correct, it depends on the amplifier. My Musical Fidelity NuVista M3 is rated 275 at 8 ohms, my tech friend measured 325 with extremely low distortion. It will pulse over 800 watts at 2 ohms. Any good amp will deliver much more than it...
VPI Scout to Michell Orbe SE
I am a VPI dealer and was a Michell dealer; they are both good tables but this looks more like a sideways move to me. Remember that you are paying an import penalty on the Michell, in the UK the VPI may well be more expensive. I would wait and mov...
Next Upgrade for VPI Scoutmaster TT
Yes, I tried some small sorbothane discs under the motor, they were better than the standard feet but I liked the points better. It may well depend on the turntable stand, I use a Star Sound rack and everything is designed to transfer any vibratio...
tube watts vs transistor watts?
Just because a speaker says "200 watts power handling" doesn't mean that it requires 200 watts to function. The 200 is a maximum, not a minimum and only a very loose maximum at that. Ratings in watts tell you very little about how any amp, tube or...
Next Upgrade for VPI Scoutmaster TT
Either the 1.5" or 2" will work. I have used the 1.5 most of the time. Another thing I forgot to mention was I took the rubber feet off the VPI motor and put 3 .2 Audio Points under it instead. I have used products from TTWeights and been happy wi...
What are the alternatives for Kimber and Cardas?
I use Van den Hul The First Ultimate; I am also a dealer for them. They are very highly regarded over seas as an alternative to Cardas, but at a considerably lower price. They often come up here for under $250 a meter pair, the retail is about $40...
Next Upgrade for VPI Scoutmaster TT
I am a VPI and Dynavector dealer and have used a standard Scoutmaster and the 75 2 phono stage. The first thing I would do is to change the standard feet for Star Sound solid brass ones [1/4 20 thread]. This tightens up the bass and improves trans...
Cable Options from Breaker to Receptacle
I have PS Audio, they look stranded to me. According to their web site they use "multiple gauge and shaped conductors". I take this to mean stranded as opposed to a single solid. I have had no interest in Audio Quest since the days I was a dealer ...
Lyra Helikon mono TOO MUCH for VPI Scout?
This is the kind of question only you can answer; I am a VPI dealer and have used the Scout myself. Will it work in the Scout? Yes. Will it sound as good as it would in the Scoutmaster or equivalent from another manufacture? No. If it were me I wo...
best cartridge under $500
I am a moving coil user but with the SME I would use MM, they are a better fit for the characteristics of the arm; they are the type of cartridge it was designed to use. There are many choices, I like the contemporary Ortofon "color" line up but NO...
Cable Options from Breaker to Receptacle
If stranded is deficient in some manner then the makers of the more expensive brands of cable are doing a good job of disguising it. Although I have no intention of paying $18 or more a foot there are many on the market that are in this range or a...
Under $1,000 Cartridge for Aries 2 Extended
I had that table with the SMF and SDS and found the Denon 304 very good, better than the 103 which I was also using. Denon has an even better cartridge in the 8 to 9 hundred $ range I haven't tried.
