Is it possible to buy a decent tube amplifier in the $2000-3000 range?
used cary cad120smkii come up occasionally for around 3k.  120-ish watts in UL.
Obscure brands worth considering
+1 on Cantons, especially its reference line.  Somewhat obscure, unloved, and arguably overpriced in the US, but fantastic. For budget, I'll throw in Dennis Had's Inspires.  Judging solely on the m50 PSETs, Wall Audio.  Just lovely.
PrimaLuna Dialogue Premium Preamplifier. DESTROYS SPEAKERS!!
Wolf--those leaky caps probably just add to the distinctive rockin' _ss vintage tone that no ss or modeler can truly duplicate!Back in the day (and maybe still), rockers would intentionally take various sharp or blunt instruments to their speaker ...
Are future improvements in Amp/PreAmps slowing to a crawl?
I have absolutely no doubt that you make a fine amplifier, but, unfortunately, you are starting to sound a bit like this Bo fella with his "Tru-fi" business.
Streaming vs traditional
You can add me to the purely personal/anecdotal/unscientific side that finds, in most instances, the MQA from Tidal through a Bluesound 2 through a separate DAC sounds better than the non-MQA.  In most instances, the semi-MQA through the arguably ...
Looking to completely overhaul my preamp section, knowledgeable people needed!
@primarist. Lots of good advice to consider. As for the Freya and Emotiva, pretty much everything I’ll say should be qualified with "for the price." I think they are both very good, but neither are "giant killers." Sorry for the long post.Emotiva-...
what speakers to buy
@dragonbutx.  Canton is a lonely club, but they are fantastic.  That tweeter is really something.  Unusual that you even have the option to purchase used.
Amplifier matching with omega super Alnico Monitors.
Looks like OP has a great pairing with the alnicos and the 518.  Just going to throw out my limited experience with the 3 HOs, having never heard the alnicos.  For what they do best, they are impressive...just an unrestrained speed and aliveness i...
Looking to completely overhaul my preamp section, knowledgeable people needed!
OP, I have both the XSP-1 and the Freya.  I think both offer great values.  I think the XSP-1 is very transparent and mine is dead silent, and even the tone controls function well.  It's a fantastic value if you intend to use the features like the...
Is it the beer or do speakers/electronics really need some extended warm-up period?
Maybe I'm delusional or have crappy, thermally unstable amps, too, but my CAD211fes and 500MBs sound better after about 30-45 minutes of warmup.  Not that they are "bad" cold, just seem to smooth out a little bit.  Seems that way whether I stay in...
Question for cable/wire naysayers.....
@op. I guess I'm a naysayer.  I believe in using decent quality, well-constructed cables that fit a particular need. Once there, though, what I don't hear on any of my systems or on anyone else's or in any shop demos are the immediate night and d...
Streaming vs traditional
I agree with 2psyop.
Tekton Double Impacts
@waltersalas Is that an actual new, old stock carafe or does it just test as new on an opacity gauge?  if the latter, when and how was the equipment calibrated?
Tekton Double Impacts
omg. thought I was the only one. mine has a built-in burr grinder, so I put the machine on sorbothane hemispheres on a maple butcher block with another set of hemispheres underneath that. then lined the back panel with dynamat. the improvement in ...
