Obscure bands Had to dust off some Love Tractor after reading through this thread. "Themes From Venus" is a great album. Also, Marty mentioned some Feelies spin-offs early on, but didn't mention my personal favorite Feelies spin-off - Wake Ooloo. Silly name, bu...
Austrailian rock and roll Thanks for the ideas. There are some really interesting groups here. I forgot to mention one artist who is an acquired taste for some people, but is a true original- Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. He has very dark lyrics, but I like his baritone voi...
Austrailian rock and roll I would throw New Zealand in there as well. Love Tommy Emmanuel and want to check out some of these other people.
Obscure bands Another criminally obscure artist is Bill Mallonee from Athens, GA. Bill has released a ridiculous number of albums to critical acclaim, but has never achieved significant commercial success. Both his solo works and his band Vigilantes of Love are...
Obscure bands I like China Crisis a lot and thanks for reminding me of Crack the Sky. I always equate a band's relative obscurity with being regional independent acts. This is the type of original music I have always strived to find and seek out when I travel. ...
Whats playing on your system today? Todd is great. I have admired his originality, humor, and craftmanship for a long time. Although sometimes I( don't know what to)feel (had to say that) that he could use a good editor, he plays what he wants, how he wants- and that is probably his...

Whats playing on your system today? Love the Continental Drifters, DBs, Don Dixon, Golden Palominos, et al. I associate Mitch Easter's Let's Active and early REM with that genre as well as the Connells, Guadalcanal diary, the Jayhawks (who have a new one out) because of the vocals, ...
Whats playing on your system today? I dusted off "Peggy Suicide" by Julian Cope last night. I had forgotten what a weird dude he is, but also enjoyed the music a lot. Cope definitely has the Iggy Pop/Bowie vibe going on this one.

Just how great is Elvis Costello There is an interesting documentary currently playing on Showtime called "Elvis Costello: Mystery Dance". I particularly enjoyed the point they made that Costello is respected by other artists not only for his musicianship and arranging capabiliti...
What's your opinion on Jimmy Fallon's House band THE ROOTS? I think it was a great move by Fallon to hire them. In a day and age of artists using autotune to achieve an image of what they think sells, the Roots are refreshing in their originality. A sense of humor also doesn't hurt. |
