Van Halen- s/t side 1.
Amazing Album Sides
There are amazing album sides that rock and swing from the first song through the last. The albums they come from are usually outstanding, but one side seems to get played over and over.
I'm going to start with a somewhat obscure and less obvious choice...Talking Heads' "Remain In Light" Side 1: "Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)", "Crosseyed and Painless", "The Great Curve".
Which one does it for you?

Some of my favorite album sides have already been mentioned (Beatles "Abbey Road" side 2, Jimi Hendrix Experience "Electric Ladyland" side 4). Here are a few more: Santana - Welcome side 1 Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy side 1 Tears For Fears - Seed Of Love side 1 Grateful Dead - Anthem Of the Sun side 1 Roxy Music - Avalon side 2 Supremes - Where Did Are Love Go side 2 Velvet Underground - Loaded side 1 Annie Lennox - Diva side 2 Clash - London Calling side 1 Mick Taylor - Mick Taylor side 2 Miles Davis - Fiilles de Kilimanjaro side 1 Otis Rush - Cold Day In Hell side 1 & side 2 Pretenders - The Pretenders side 2 |
Martykl Nice job reviving this one, Albert, so I'll go with one of your favorite bands: Agree, I frequently play "Electro Shock Blues" the LP release just before Daises. The side with "3 Speed" is great. I frequently hear guests chuckle upon hearing the lyrics of "Hospital Food." |
Great thread!!! All above mentioned are superb. I might add: Nektar-Remember The Future Pink Floyd-Wish You Were Here Supertramp-Crisis What Crisis? Side 1 Elton John-Tumbleweed Connection Side 2 Genesis-Foxtrot Jethro Tull-Thick As A Brick Side 1 (so where the hell was Biggles, when you needed him last Saturday?) Rush-Moving Pictures Moody Blues-A Question Of Balance |
Nice job reviving this one, Albert, so I'll go with one of your favorite bands: Side two of Eels' "Daises of the Galaxy". Whiile you can make a case for a bunch of Eels/M. O. Everitt sides, I think this is my favorite Great from start to finish IMHO. From the mid '60s thru mid 70s, a bunch of bands got hot and produced a string of great side; Beatles, Stones, Zep, and a few other already mentioned are good examples. Given my own fixation with them, I also gotta mention the 8 side streak that Fleetwood Mac produced from their Eponymous LP thru Tusk. So, I'll take some liberties and extend the thread to include consecutive sides of great music. I'd guess that many folks would add Dylan, CSNY, and The Who to the list. The prog rock runs from Yes and Genesis, the punk run from The Clash, and a bunch of other genre specific stuff probably deserves mention, too. However, one sleeper candidate for "Mother of All Hot Streaks" was Creedence Clearwater's 10 side streak in the 24 month period starting in July, 1968: CCR Bayou Country Green River Willy and the Poor Boys Cosmo's Factory I don't think there's a weak side in the bunch. Im sure you can make a case for others, but this was all within 2 years. IMO, this be the most prolific run in rock n roll history. |
Resurrecting this old thread rather than starting a new one. This past Tuesday night our music group gathered at my home and among the LPs were the old Jim Morrision, Doors An American Prayer. I can hardly believe it was released way back in 1978 and I recall much controversy, some even calling it A rape of Jim Morrison. Regardless of those times it still moves me today, the Doors remain one of my all time favorite rock bands and this LP is too often overlooked. |
Several titles come to mind: By far the greatest, Abbey Road, Side 2. The music is timeless. DSOTM - Pink Floyd - Both sides. I wore quite a few vinyl and cassette copies out over the years. Now I have it on SACD and 30th Anniversary vinyl. Boston - Boston - Side 1 Aqualung - Jethro Tull - Side 1 - Beautiful, gritty and melodic. Aja - Steely Dan - Both sides. Truly their best effort. David Arkenstone - Everything he recorded on the Narada label still gets a LOT of spin here. Selling England By The Pound - Genesis - Side 1. Puts me into a trance. -- Jan |
Tvad - great thread! One that I actually will monitor. Oneprof - I can't believe I forgot Queen's "Side Black" and their "Sheer Heart Attack" side. Especially since it meets my uniqueness demand. (Like Kate). Rbischoff - Another great side with Traffic's "John Barleycorn Must Die". Jaybo - Good call with "Thin Lizzy's "Jailbreak" I listen to everything but it's great to see some rocker's here on the Gon! |
Pat Travers - Crash and Burn, side one. One of the best sides in my rock collection. Excellent recording - kudos to the engineers. I posted this days ago and quoted another post I made about it. There's a piece of trivia I wanted to share. They censored it - what a joke. Here's the link: censored? By the way, side 2 truly crash and burns. |
Great thread. Got me thinking about which album sides I play the most. BTW, for review of pop/rock music, Robert Christgau is indespensible and a good place to look for new music...http://www.robertchristgau.com/ Here are few less obvious pop album sides: Buena Vista Social Club, side C El Carretero Candela Amor de Loca Juventud Johnny Cash "American IV" side 1 The Man Comes Around Hurt Give my Love to Rose Bridge Over Troubled Water I Hung My Head First Time Ever I Saw Your Face Personal Jesus The Clash "London Calling" side 1 (gets extra credit for the coolest album cover ever) London Calling Brand New Cadillac Jimmy Jazz Hateful Rudie Can't Fail Elvis Costello "Imperial Bedroom" side 1 Beyond Belief Tears Before Bedtime Shabby Doll The Long Honeymoon Man Out of Time Almost Blue ...and In Every Home Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" side 1 So What Freddie Freeloader Blue in Green Fine Young Cannibals "Eponymous" side 1 Johnny Come Home Couldn't Care More Don't Ask Me to Choose Funny How Love Is Suspicious Minds (possibly greatest cover ever?) Prince "Sign O The Times" side 3 U Got the Look If I Was Your Girlfriend Strange Relationship I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man Rockpile "Seconds of Pleasure" side 1 Teacher Teacher If Sugar Was As Sweet As You Heart Now and Always A Knife and Fork Play That Fast Thing Stevie Wonder "Hotter Than July" side 2 Master Blaster (Jammin') Do Like You Cash In Your Face Lately Happy Birthday X "More Fun in the New World" side 2 Devil Doll Painting The Town Blue Hot House Drunk in my Past I See Red True Love Pt. #2 |
Very much in agreement with the Abbey Road and Hendrix recommendations among others mentioned (ELP, King Crimson). Please add to the list, the Rolling Stones' "Exile on Main Street". For your consideration: Side 2 of Disc 1 (Sweet Virginia, Torn & Frayed, Black Angel, Loving Cup). Followed for me by Side 2 of Disc 2 (All Down the Line, Stop Breaking Down, Shine a Light, Soul Survivor). How many decades has it been? Still listen to and enjoy this mightily. |
I would say Benjamin Lew's Nebka LP. Side one. I first heard this on a tape from a friend, he only put on side one. I asked what side two sounded like and he said he didn't know he had only ever played side one, that is how good it was. I didn't have a turntable at the time and it was a rather rare find on CD, so years later I finally got the vinyl and got to hear side two. Side two is great, but not quite like side one. |
pretty much any beatles side...but that grand finale on abbey road where they jam has no equal. the biggest band in history kicking it out on record like never before. an appropriate finish to an unbelievable legacy........two of my favorites are the second side of the notorious byrd bros and side two of S&g's bookends. |
