Which CD player?
Of course the Apollo is a new player, only available for around $1000.00, a few used examples currently available for around $875.00. A used CD-25 costing around $300.00, about the same for an original Planet, the 2000 model going for around $550....
Can I build an Linn LP-12 piece by piece?
Dred, as you said, you come from a manufacturing background, which imparts a certain level of expertise, but I can tell you from first hand personal experience, and having known some of the best Linn mechanics in NY and LA, that a manual and a han...
Has anyone removed tarnish from Gallo tweeter?
Dopogue, apparently humor does not always translate to the written word. Like love, it is often hard to quantify. But thanks for the info. BTW, wouldn't the crossover on the tweeter constitute a high-pass "crossover between the mids and the tweete...
Can I build an Linn LP-12 piece by piece?
Why not, that's how I built my Ferrari Testarossa?
Has anyone removed tarnish from Gallo tweeter?
Why not remove the tweeter altogether and run the mid/bass driver full range, as is all the rage these days? The full damping of the amp is not compromised by the crossover and you can try some cool single ended amps and a dac with no filter. Be s...
4 ohm vs 8 ohm taps
Yes, it is a try and see kind of thing, but the 4 ohm tap will always have lower impedance which will translate into better damping of the speaker, no matter what impedance the speaker is. This will not always sound "best" and using a 4 ohm tap wi...
Which CD player?
I have owned, at the same time, the ONIX XCD-88, which is the same as the Music Hall, the Rotel RCD 1072, which is the current version of the 1070 and the Original Rega Planet. For me it was the Planet for sound and for ergonomics, YMMV.
Too good to be true?
I would be only too happy to check the serial numbers for you. Please contact me off board with the phone number of the pawn shop, the name of the dopey old guy that runs it and the address. You will sleep much better at night.
Why would you risk it?
Ya, the pilot put in one of the tubes backwards.
Splitting turntable signal
In the good old days, when everyone used tape machines, some tape outs were buffered, they had their own amplifiers to drive just that output. Unfortunately, this is very rarely the case today, the signal just being passed along passively to the t...
new to phono.. Can I hook one up to my preamp?
It is very easy, but I think that the answer to your question depends on what you want to achieve, what turntable and cartridge you are using, how much of your listening time will be spent on LP replay and how much money you wish to allocate to th...
ar turntable resurrection advice
The Denon DL-110 is a high-output moving coil that will meet your needs and fit your budget. I would also take a look at the Audio Technica AT-440ml, for a brighter, more foreward, sound at a similar price point.
Rega P25 vs VPI Scout
It's really too bad that both designs, which I like, have such major built-in flaws, the Rega with no VTA adjustment and the VPI with no anti-skate. But I think that the type of sound that you like will be the deciding factor. The Rega tight and p...
Splitting turntable signal
The output of your phono preamp is at line level, so you can split the signal after the phono preamp as you have asked. A switch will be preferable. If you do not use a switch, the phono preamp will see the impedances of both preamps, this can end...
Bargain interconnects to tame treble & boost bass?
Cardas 300B interconnects have the mellow sound that you are seeking. That does not necessarily mean that they will cure the problem.
