Beware of PayPal fees

I live in Israel. I have recently purchased an audio item from Europe. I agreed with the seller that I would pay his PayPal fees. When I checked initially about the fees I read something like 3.4%. To my astonishment they charged him (me) 5.2% with all sorts of extra fees. Beware!

The other charges are the conversion rates changing currency. 3 to 4% is the part you should be concerned with. What a rip off.
Thanks! for sharing taviran.
this is a text-book example of why I would never use a so-called service like praypal.
We must post both positive and negative experiences when dealing w/ these companies.
Aside from extra fees due to currency conversion with international sales, PayPal in the U.S. is very simple with a fee of 2.9% of the transaction plus 30 cents.

Now whether or not that's worth it is for each person to decide. But it's a straightforward business transaction and is only a "ripoff" if you don't know the specifics.

Use PayPal or don't use it, either is a valid choice. Just know (aka, research) what you're getting into ahead of time.
.
I don't buy or sell outside of the continental U.S..

PayPal has worked for me.  Yes the fees are an annoyance, but I like the safety it brings to the transaction.
.
Paypal charges me like 3.2% now.

I usually offer buyers 2 options. Friend and family, no fee. 5%-10% more if they want to use the good&services options (to compensate for the risk).

Mr. Coli,

You write that PayPal charges you "like 3.2%" so where do you live? What nation? Perhaps the fee per transaction outside the U.S. is higher?

Or is the word "like" in your sentence your shorthand for saying you haven’t fully done the maths?

Dave, who surely also wishes PayPal fees were less but also wishes the least-expensive Aurender music server would cost only $650
Mr. E BM,

In what way is PayPal a "ripoff"?
Is it simply that you think its services should cost less?
If that's the case, please be specific.
What would you say a fair fee should be?

Dave, who is curious

And credit cards (for the seller) carry approximately the same fees, as well as foreign transaction fees, if appropriate. I think it's a fair service for transacting cash transactions quickly. I think it's also fair for a foreign buyer to take the fee for currency transaction, but I don't think the seller should be handing off the fee for the base transaction -- cost of doing business. If one doesn't want to use credit cards (or PayPal) in his sale, waiting for ten days for funds to clear, that's his choice. But if he wants a faster, cleaner sale, then he (seller) should pay that fee, unless disclosed otherwise at the outset of offer.
If you *really* trust the other party use Bitcoin for international if they'll accept it (where you actually know the seller or have done a lot of business with them before).  Be careful though you can't reverse the transaction if there's a problem.  Fees are almost nil.  Just an option for certain scenarios.
About 3 years ago I made my first purchase thru Audiogon and paid by personal check.  Make a long story short the deal went south and the seller (expelled by AG) kept my $420 and the merchandise.  If I'd used PayPal etc.  I would have got my money back.
This is a bit off the beaten path but I am planing to upgrade and this means selling a piece of gear .I have not made a transaction on agon for a few years with paypal. My question is does paypal send out 1099's for money earned from equipment sales. Thanks!
PayPal held  my 3000 euros because of arrogant buyer´s dispute on eBay.
My business AND my money without warning just froze for an unknown period of time. I had to fight 5 weeks for my money. Finally they admitted it was not my fault at all.

PayPal is the biggest scam artist there. We are all a happy family there until THEY screw you.

eBay and PayPal will never ever again play games with me.
I hated paypal so much that all 4 of my business online stopped accepting payments through this scamming company.  For Small transactions outside of ebay its fine to use. I stopped shopping on Ebay strictly due to Paypal and how they govern whos right and wrong.
Paypal is real GARBAGE don't use it why make somebody else(jerks) rich keep on truckin!!
