Instruments of the Orchestra
Chart of the frequency range of musical instruments are common. This site came up first on a Google search:http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/music/orchins.html
Does it matter what power amp i get?
Some things about amps definitely matter. You want an amp that can deliver the power your speakers demand. That's a function of their sensitivity and the impedance load they present. Every 100w amp isn't the same, because not every 100w amp can de...
Please help--my ears are hurting
Papertrail: I think the problem is that you're "listening too hard" to your new CD player. I suspect that the actual differences between your CD and DVD players are less dramatic than you think. Sometimes our frame of mind can be more important th...
How Screwed Am I?
No "micro" satellite is going to overcome the basic problem with the Bose system. The minimum acceptable music/HT system would be something like four Paradigm Atoms and matching center and sub. You're talking something like $1k for the set. If you...
How Screwed Am I?
One basic problem with the Bose approach is that it tries to make the "subwoofer" cover too much ground, and nothing you've contemplated fixes that problem. You sure won't find a subwoofer (at any price) that "better matches" the Bose satellites. ...
iTunes idiot needs some help
Ah, well, cheesy old pop records from the short-playing-time LP era, sure...;-)
iTunes idiot needs some help
I think Ed's numbers are a bit off. Figuring 600MB per CD, a 20GB iPod will hold about 30 CDs in WAV format, and maybe 50 or so in Apple Lossless.
iTunes idiot needs some help
First, you need to get realistic. You can't compress 400 CDs to fit on a 20GB iPod with acceptable sound quality. Period. So you either have to get a bigger iPod or leave some of your music off it. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. How much music...
Are Rotel amps and preamps any good?
By any chance, do these dealers sell Rotel? If they do, but they talk down Rotel, are they trying to steer you to a more expensive product? You have to consider the source. Rotel is generally considered to be a quality budget audiophile line.
Where will audio be in 10 years?
Source will be a mass storage device--probably physically minute with massive capacity. The exact configuration would be impossible to predict, because this end of the audio chain is subject to Moore's Law. All music will be downloaded; no one wil...
Polk RTi10 vs. Paradigm Studio 20 or Mini Monitor
First, "in the corner" is not necessarily the best place for any speaker. Pull them away from the walls, to the extent tolerated by She Who Must Be Obeyed. The corner is often exactly the right place for the subwoofer, which you are getting to com...
Two excellent sampler CD's from Putumayo
I recent acquired a promotional disc, "Putumayo World Music 2004 Summer Sampler," which is sort of a sampler of samplers. (It includes the Sephuma cut from "Women of Africa.") Not really my cup of tea overall, but this is definitely a label that's...
How Important Is The Cdp?
I agree with TIC on two points: The original poster's speakers are fine, and dollar ratios for components are pretty much meaningless. But I also agree with Marakanetz's general point, which is that speakers are far more critical than digital sour...
How Important Is The Cdp?
I know my room isnt the greatest, but somehow i get the sence that the room isnt the main problem im having, sure it could use alot of improvement but the bad sound seems to be coming directly from the speakers.Your perception notwithstanding, spe...
CD v.s LP - When comming from the same MASTER
Albert: We're talking about different things. You are saying that LPs usually sound better to you than CDs. A lot of audiophiles agree (including me, sometimes). What I am saying is that if you start from a 24/96 master, a CD will sound closer to ...
