Amp suggestionsfor Wilson Watt Puppies/Sophia
I forgot to mention that I heard a pair of Sophias driven by a VTL ST-150 amp at my dealer's and the sound was very impressive. Great soundstage, warm yet detailed, and you could pick out the bass drum and bass guitar in separate locations between...
Amp suggestionsfor Wilson Watt Puppies/Sophia
I had a pair of Sophias and now have a pair of WP7's. I tried a bunch of amps with both speakers, including OTL, SET, and push-pull tube amps, as well as some solid-state amps. I listen mainly to rock and jazz of all types and am in a small room. ...
SME 20/2 & Graham Phantom issue
I have this exact combo and mine works fine as set up by Brooks Berdan. However, I am not sure how Brooks did it. Actually, the first time I had the turntable set up using the SME mount the VTF knob did slightly hit the suspension o-rings when swi...
Phono-pre
I had a Michael Yee Audio PFE-1, which I think retails for about $900. Michael is the designer of the Musical Surroundings Phenomena and the newer Supernova. The PFE-1 has variable gain and load settings and can be configured for about 65dB of gai...
worst 'long-lived' band
I agree with Fatparrot above. The Stones were bad enough in their heyday in the 60's and early 70's--they did write some OK stuff--but later they have become almost comical. I read somewhere that after the early 70's they no longer wrote their tun...
step up for mc
There is an article in the September Sterophile by Art Dudley talking about transformer step-up devices for MC cartridges and how to select the optimal gain and loading for your particular cartridge. He discuss a relatively inexpensive unit from K...
Tube amps
Tube amps are usually not as good at handling low impedance speaker loads due to their high output impedances. A typical tube amp output impedance is about 0.5 to several ohms, while solid-state amps can have impedances down to 0.01 ohm, depending...
Input voltage gain on levinson amps ?
Hey, Arthur, nice job.
Tube amps
I agree with the other posters above. I have WP7's and while they are voltage efficient at 92 db/watt, they are a difficult load in the bass. I tried some 15 wpc SET Cary Audio amps and the bass was flaccid and the dynamic range was compressed. Ni...
Input voltage gain on levinson amps ?
The volume will be the same only if the voltage gain for the two amps is the same. However, even if the volume is the same, the two systems will sound different. If the systems are in different rooms this probably won't matter, but then neither wo...
Input voltage gain on levinson amps ?
What you need to know is either the voltage gain of the amp or the voltage needed to drive the amp to full output. You can then use the two formulas to figure out the gain: P=Vsquared/R and Gain=20log(V2/V1).
efficiency- hope i spelt that wright.
My Wilson Watt Puppy 7's have 92 dB efficiency, although at 4 ohms impedance they draw twice the current that one rated at 8 ohms would have. I tried some 15 wpc SET amps with them, and while they would drive them to reasonably satisfying sound le...
Should I upgrade from Sylvania 6DJ8 to better tube
I agree with the above posters. I like any of the European vintage 6922's and 7308's. If your C-J uses 6DJ8's and isn't too hard on the tubes my favorite 6DJ8 type is the earlier Siemens CCa. Big, smooth, full with tight bass and huge soundstage. ...
Members with No Feedback
One suggestion for those who have little or no feedback, if they wish to gain some positive feedback scores, is to buy some inexpensive CD's or LP's and make sure to trade feedback. That way you now have some positive feedback so that sellers have...
Was just Listening to Dan Fogelberg...
Patricia Barber, Martha Davis of The Motels, Carole Kidd, Holly Cole, Marti Jones (highly recommend Used Guitars--great sound), Suzanne Vega, Billie Holiday.
